  • Collaborative governance in higher-education residential centers

    Open Access•Juan P Dabdoub, Aitor R Salaverría et al.•ARTICLE•Estudios sobre Educación•2026

This study explores collaborative governance in highereducation residential centers as a means to promote character development. Its aim is to analyze how this practice is designed and implemented, the challenges it faces, and the opportunities it offers. A mixed-methods questionnaire was administered to directors of 35 centers across six countries. Results show that, although collaborative governance is common, it rarely relies on evidence-based…

  • Redesigning schools for effective character education through leadership

Open Access•Juan P Dabdoub, Daniela Salgado et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Moral Education•2024

This paper presents two leadership training programs focused on redesigning schools to promote student character development and advocates for their suitability to promote character education in diverse cultural contexts. This is especially relevant for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers who are searching for replicable interventions to promote character development in schools, particularly in those countries where the character educat…

  • A comprehensive meta-analysis of character education programs

Mitch Brown, Robert E Mcgrath et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Moral Education•2023

This study represents a large meta-analytic investigation of character education studies. We identified 214 studies up until 2017 (NTotal = 307,512) with at least one computable effect size comparing a character education program to a control condition. Initial analyses indicated a small, significant average positive effect for character education (g = 0.24, 95% CI [0.19, 0.28]). Single-session interventions and mentoring programs were associated…

  • Implementing and Assessing Evidence-Based Character Education

    Open Access•Marvin W Berkowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Education•2022

Those who implement character education initiatives intend for those initiatives to be effective in promoting the development of character. To maximize this likelihood, it is important to consider common problems of implementation and assessment. This article addresses four challenges to effective implementation: (a) what counts as evidence of effectiveness, (b) how to know about such evidence, (c) how to implement with fidelity, and (d) how to a…

  • Quantum Character

    Open Access•Marvin W Berkowitz•ARTICLE•Human Development•2014

Lerner and Schmid Callina [this issue], in their article “The Study of Character Development: Towards Tests of a Relational Developmental Systems Model,” propose to advance research on specifically the development of character by proposing a theoretical framework of particular value, namely a relational developmental systems (RDS) model [Overton & Mϋller, 2013]. The justification lies in the understanding that character is developmental, multidim…

  • Moral education and character education

Wolfgang Althof, Marvin W Berkowitz•ARTICLE•Journal of Moral Education•2006

Any democratic society must concern itself with the socialization of its citizens. This begins in childhood, and schools are critical to this process. The interrelations and roles of educating for character (character education, moral education) and educating for citizenship (citizenship education, civic education) are explored, largely in a North American context. It is argued that citizenship education necessarily entails character and moral fo…

Whereas character education is not new, scientific study of its effectiveness has been only sporadically implemented during the past thirty-five years. Much of the application of character education is therefore not informed by a scientific knowledge base. This article introduces a scientific perspective on character education and a summary of the research base examining the student impact of school-based character education. From this research b…
