Race, Ethnicity, Neighborhood Characteristics, and In-Hospital Coronavirus Disease-2019 Mortality
BACKGROUND: Despite many studies reporting disparities in coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) incidence and outcomes in Black and Hispanic/Latino populations, mechanisms are not fully understood to inform mitigation strategies. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to test whether neighborhood factors beyond individual patient-level factors are associated with in-hospital mortality from COVID-19. We hypothesized that the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a neighbor…

Ongoing Assessment of Health Status in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus
In 1990, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Henry Ford Hospital established an Outcomes Management data base for patients with Type I and Type II diabetes. A first cohort of 117 patients completed a baseline and 6-month follow-up assessment; a second cohort of 116 patients completed the baseline assessment. Assessment at each time point includes: the Short Form--36 Questions (SF-36) health status instrument; a set of clinical variabl…
A Classification System for Long-Staying Psychiatric Patients
Data on a sample of 890 Veteran's Administration long-staying psychiatric patients were studied to develop a classification system that explains actual daily resource use. Disturbed patients with lengths of stay of less than three years and those with psychotic conditions who are not withdrawn represent the two groups found to use significantly more resources in their daily care. The Long-Stay Psychiatric Patient Classification (LPPC) System, wit…
A Psychiatric Patient Classification System
It is generally accepted that diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) for alcohol, drug, and mental disorders are inappropriate for inpatient prospective payment. To address this issue, the Veterans Administration (VA) supported a project to construct alternative classes that are more clinically meaningful, more homogeneous in their resource use, and that account for more variation in resource use among psychiatric and substance use cases than existing D…
Components of aggression in chickens and conceptualizations of aggression in general
A refined analysis of the peck order in chickens was offered as a test of the notion that for this species, different responses such as leaping and various types of pecking need not be interchangeable indexes of aggression. Indeed, tests showed that particular response types of the birds were differentially mediated by organismic or environmental factors. In large cages pecking at the body was most frequent by birds that had a home-cage advantage…
Role Playing and the Study of Jury Behavior
Widespread use of simulated trials and mock juries to study jury behavior has stimulated concern for the external validity ofsuch simulations. A study is reported which examined the role-playing nature of mock jury deliberation. Subjects were either given typical role-playing instructions, or were led to believe that they were deciding an actual student discipline case. The two conditions did not differ significantly on their group or individual …
Mediating factors in chick social pecking
Two experiments examined the influence of periods of social isolation on rates of intersubject pecking in pairs of domestic chicks. Of central interest was the effect of an imprinting condition wherein single birds were reared with either a red or green Styrofoam object. In the first experiment, imprinted subjects were given social pecking tests in the absence of the imprinting object, while in the second study the tests for social pecking were c…
Mediating factors in chick social pecking
Unfamiliarity with movement may lead isolated chicks to respond aggressively when tested with live, moving conspecifics. This hypothesis was tested by comparing the number and locus of pecks by isolated chicks to a stationary or moving model of a chick, and to a live chick. In a second test of the hypothesis chicks that viewed a moving object during isolation and chicks isolated without movement were tested with a live con-specific and their numb…
Isolation-induced social pecking in domestic chicks
Aspects of the social pecking of domestic chicks in a free response situation were examined in a series of experiments. It was proposed that a dual pattern of responses involving (a) a preponderance of pecks at the head of a conspecific, and (b) heightened emotionality (as indicated by the emission of distress calls) might be taken to reflect an aggressive tendency, and evidence was reviewed that showed that a brief period of isolation was a suff…
