Research, Policy Development, and Progress
Justice policy is typically based more on political considerations than on research results. One way to break down barriers between researchers and policy-makers is to encourage partnerships. AUTO21, a member of the Networks of Centres of Excellence program, is designed to facilitate partnerships. The Antisocial Behaviour and the Automobile project focuses on auto theft, driving under the influence of alcohol and cannabis, and road rage/driver ag…
Gender, Driver Aggression, and Driver Violence
Traffic congestion, driver stress, and driver aggression
Drivers were interviewed over cellular telephones in high- and low-congestion conditions during a single commute. During each interview, state measures of driver stress and driver behaviors were obtained. Behavior responses were subdivided into six categories: aggressive, information seeking, planning, minor self-destructive, distraction, and relaxation techniques. Both state driver stress and aggression were greater in high- than in low-congesti…

The effect of telephone messages/prompts on return rates of first-time blood donors
In an effort to examine the interplay of prompts and various appeals to blood donor motives, blood donors were telephoned by Canadian Red Cross Society volunteers within l week following their first donation with one of four different scripts: (1) describing the scheduling of blood donations; (2) praising the donor in addition to providing the scheduling information; (3) providing information on the uses of donated blood plus scheduling informati…
Generalization of relative competence mediating conformity across differing tasks
Subject correctness and group agreement were initially varied for college subjects performing a multiple‐choice informational task (Canadian Knowledge Inventory). On a subsequent perceptual task (Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices), the dependent variable of conformity was assessed to examine generalization of relative competence formed on the informational task. It was seen that: (1) Those who perceived themselves to be less competent than th…
Conformity as a function of task generalization and relative competence
Subject correctness and group agreement were varied for college subjects engaged in a light discrimination task. On another task, employing multiple‐choice questions about Canada, the dependent variable of conformity was assessed to examine generalization of relative competence formed on the light discrimination task. It was seen that (1) relative competence was seen to mediate conformity for a specific task (Canadian Knowledge Inventory), but di…
Effects of prior group agreement and task correctness on relative competence mediating conformity
Fifty‐six male and 61 female university students participated in a 2 × 2 × 2 design with task correctness‐incorrectness, group agreement‐disagreement and sex of subject constituting the classification factors. A modified Crutchfield apparatus served to manipulate a subject's prior experience of correctness and agreement, and to measure subsequent conformity. Correctness and group agreement were seen to interact to produce varying degrees of perce…
The experimenter as a source of variance in psychological research
Effects of deceiving and debriefing psychological subjects on performance in later experiments
