This study explored factors affecting affirmative action attitudes. Undergraduates at a Hispanic‐Serving Institution completed measures assessing support for Black‐targeted and Hispanic‐targeted affirmative action, perceived discrimination against Blacks and Hispanics, and demographic information. • Gendered Self-Views Across 62 Countries: A Test of Competing Models

    Open Access•Natasza Kosakowska‐berezecka, Jennifer K Bosson et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2023

Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countrie…

  • Psychometric Properties and Correlates of Precarious Manhood Beliefs in 62 Nations

Open Access•Jennifer K Bosson, Paweł Jurek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2021

Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data …

  • Global Community: Global Security

    Randall E Osborne, Paul Kriese•BOOK•Global community•2008

Global security cannot be achieved until people view the world as a global community. Until such time, differences will continue to be perceived as threatening. These perceived “threats” are the primary threat to global security. This volume proposes methods for minimizing the “us versus them” mentality so that we can build a sense of global community.

  • "I May be Homeless, But I'm Not Helpless": The Costs and Benefits of Identifying with Homelessness

    Randall E Osborne•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2002

Anecdotal research strongly suggests homeless persons who develop subsistence strategies to survive on the street maintain self-reliance yet are highly unlikely to transition back off the street. The current study empirically tests this assumption. Ninety-seven homeless persons were interviewed, given a spontaneous self-concept description measure, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(1979). Combing two self-report scores created an "identificatio…

  • A Social Comparison Perspective of Treatment Seeking by the Homeless

Randall E Osborne, John E Karlin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•1993

The homeless will readily list ailments they claim to have, yet they will also claim that such ailments are not a problem and do not warrant treatmente In an attempt to understand this apparent paradox, data from a sampLe of homeless individuals were re-analyzed from a social comparison perspective. It was hypothesized that increased entrenchment in homelessness (increased isolation from “nonhomeless” environments and further involvement in the h…

  • The preoccupational hazards of social life

    Randall E Osborne, Daniel T Gilber•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1992•Cited by: 2

Prospective interaction is often considered an antidote to inferential error because perceivers may expend effort making inferences about those with whom they expect to interact. These studies examined the possibility that prospective interaction may prevent error by motivating perceivers who have formed biased impressions of a partner to revise those impressions, but that it may also promote error by causing perceivers to spend resources prepari…
