The Relationship of Fear of Failure to Growth Need Strength and the Job Characteristics Model
Considerable research has shown that individuals high in growth need strength react positively to job enrichment efforts. However, little is known about the motives and job characteristics that appeal to the low growth need strength worker. Research on the construct “fear of failure” indicates that it should, theoretically at least, diverge with growth need strength. Further, fear of failure theory predicts that such individuals prefer gradual ch…
Personality Correlates between Need for Achievement and Subscales of the F-Scale of Authoritarianism
One section of data collected from an earlier, more complex experiment is examined to test the proposition that the achievement motive predicts authoritarian behavior. Particular subscales of the F-scale correlated differentially for 22 men and 30 women with the need for achievement, supporting the notion that authoritarianism may result, in part, from an individual with a high need for achievement
Fear of Failure and the Zeigarnik Effect
The present study was a partial replication of one by Atkinson in 1953 and an attempt to assess the effect of strength of fear-of-failure motivation on recall of interrupted and completed tasks. 81 freshman men enrolled in introductory psychology classes were administered the Thematic Apperception Test under typical “neutral” conditions. At a later date, the test for Zeigarnik effect was given and scores obtained. Correlational analyses suggested…
Correlates of Achievement, Dominance, and Creativity
A review of literature suggests that creativity and authoritarianism are negatively correlated. Based on a validation study by Ray and Lovejoy in 1983 in which need for achievement and dominance were offered as better predictors of authoritarian behaviors than traditional authoritarianism scales, we examined this relationship using a projective test for Need for Achievement (the Thematic Apperception Test) and a self-descriptive scale (the Adject…
Fear of Failure in Families without Fathers
165 students in introductory psychology were administered a modified TAT task scored for Fear of Failure using procedures developed by Birney, et al., in 1969. Significant differences in scores on Fear of Failure were reported between students in two-parent homes and those from father-absent homes. Differences in Fear of Failure scores were largest between intact families and those families where the father had died and next largest between intac…
Need for Achievement and Sociometric Status
Relationship between Hypnotic Susceptibility, Fear of Failure and Need for Achievement
21 men were administered a modified version of Murray's (1938) Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) to measure fear of failure and need for achievement. Hypnotic susceptibility was then tested using the Harvard Group Scale, Form A. The prediction that those subjects high in fear of failure would be less susceptible than those in low fear of failure was supported. No relationship was found between need for achievement and hypnotic susceptibility, supp…
Fear of Failure and Indices of Leadership Utilized in the Training of Rotc Cadets
Subjects were 43 male college seniors enrolled in the Army ROTC program. A modified version of the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) was administered and scored for fear of failure motivation by means of the Hostile Press system of Birney, Burdick, and Teevan. Scores from the Leadership Opinion Questionnaire of Fleishman, and subjects' leadership evaluations from ROTC cadet summer camp were utilized as indices of various leadership traits. Signifi…
Conflicts and Defenses in Engineering and Psychology Undergraduates
A number of psychologists have investigated the relationship .bemeen personality and choice of vocation (3, 4, 5, 6, 7 ) . The present work is a follow-up of a study by Teevan ( 7 ) which assessed the correlations between personality variables and undergraduate field of specialization. Teevan divided undergraduate fields into three large groups: Literature, Social Science, and Science. He found that the Social Science group showed higher conflict…
Sex-Role Orientation and Fear of Failure in Women
155 female students in introductory psychology responded to a modified TAT, a role-orientation scale, and a level-of-aspiration task to test the utility of the Birney, Burdick, and Teevan (1969) model of fear-of-failure motivation in predicting the behavior of females who accept culturally-defined, masculine achievement goals as personally relevant. Subjects were classified as high or low in fear-of-failure motivation, as traditional or nontradit…
Childhood Development of Fear of Failure Motivation: A Replication
Teevan and McGhee ( 1972) sent copies of a revised Winterbttom (1953) questionnaire to the mothers of 41 high school &dents. That questionnaire dealt with the nature of the mothers' reactions to their children in achievement situations when their children's behavior fulfilled their expectations (success) and when it did not (failure). They found that, when the subjects were classified into two groups, one having been rewarded for success while be…
Psychological Functioning in Headache Sufferers
The present study examined the psychological test responses of 99 headache sufferers and 30 matched nonheadache controls. Headache subjects were of four types: migraine (n = 26), muscle contraction (n = 39), combined migraine-muscle contract ion (n = 22), and cluster (n = 12). Measures consisted of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, a modified hostility scale derived from the MMPI, Back Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inve…
Practice, Performance, and Level of Aspiration
Teevan and Smith (1975) demonstrated that statements of level of aspiration set by subjects fearing failure were better understood as representing a range of aspirations. The region between the lower and upper boundaries was termed a confirming interval. The present study hypothesized that this interval narrowed with experience, that subjects were affectively indifferent to scores located within the interval, and that subjects scoring within the …
Fear of Failure in Athletes and in Non-Athletes
Relationship between Incentive and Expectations of Success
Some theorists have assumed that there is a negative relationship between the probability of success and the incentive of success. This paper presents arguments and some research which suggests that, depending upon conditions, the relationship may be either positive or negative. Possible effects of this finding upon the Atkinson model were discussed
Fear of failure and fear of success: Two dimensions of the same motive
Relationships of Fear-of-Failure and Need Achievement Motivation to a Confirming-Interval Measure of Aspirational Levels
Prior studies have shown that individuals characterized as motivated by a fear of failure tend to set levels of aspiration defensively. However, it has been hypothesized that aspirational statements can be bener understood as representing a range of aspirations. The region between lower and upper boundaries is termed a confirming interval. Ss in the present study responded to a standardized measure of fear-of-failure motivation and a scrambled wo…
Perceived Somatic Reactions to Stress and Hostile Press
Hostile Press is a measure of fear of failure. We have evidence that people high on Hostile Press see the world as a hostile, threatening place. Following this idea, we felt that persons high on Hostile Press should show psychophysiological reactions to their feelings about the world. 200 male students were given the Hostile Press measure of fear of failure and a “Reactions to Stress Questionnaire.” The prediction was that there would be a positi…
Philosophies of Human Nature and Hostile Press
64 male subjects took the Hostile Press measure of fear of failure (Birney, Burdick, & Teevan, 1969) and the Philosophies of Human Nature (Wrightsman, 1964). It was predicted that persons high on Hostile Press would perceive the world as a hostile place and thus would have a generally less favorable view of human nature—would score low on the Philosophies of Human Nature. In general, the data bore out the hypothesis although the authors felt that…

A Motivational Correlate of Viet Nam Protest Group Members
A projective test of Hostile Press motivation was given to 39 men and women, members of groups actively protesting the United States military policy in Viet Nam and 60 non-protest group members. The protest group Ss had significantly higher Hostile Press scores than the non-protest group members. Some speculative interpretation of the results was attempted
Childhood development of fear of failure motivation
Mothers of high and low fear of failure (FF) Ss completed a modified Winterbottom questionnaire. The results indicated that: (1) mothers of high FF Ss expected independence and achievement behaviors earlier than mothers of low FF Ss; (2) mothers of high FF Ss were neutral following satisfactory behavior and mothers of low FF Ss rewarding; (3) Ss whose mothers were neutral following satisfactory behavior and punishing following unsatisfactory beha…
