Disability Group Identification and Disability-Rights Advocacy: Contingencies Among Emerging and Other Adults
Following social identity theory, the present investigation examines the political benefits of self-identification as a member of the disability community for disability-rights advocacy across college ( n = 204), community ( N = 93), and international ( N = 268) samples of adults with disabilities. Intergroup bias in children: Development and persistence
Using a longitudinal approach, we examined intergroup bias based on randomly assigned novel groups in fourth‐ and fifth‐grade children (roughly 9–11 years old) involved in an afterschool program. We investigated not only the development of intergroup bias but also its persistence over multiple weeks. We discuss the construct of doubt about one’s competence and suggest that doubt can have myriad consequences (e.g., self‐handicapping, defensive pessimism). We focus on the effect of self‐doubt when it is combined with a concern with performance and assert that this combination leads to the phenomenon of subjective overachievement.
