Attitudes toward the Homeless in Two New York City Metropolitan Samples
Attitude questionnaires were administered to a sample of New York City residents and a suburban sample who worked in New York City (n = 112 for each). While overall attitudes toward the homeless were sympathetic, feelings about a shelter for the homeless in one's neighborhood were not favorable. Psychological androgyny and stressful life events
Seventy-one college students completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, a stressful life-events questionnaire, and some general questions on adjustment. Subjects were also asked to rate the stressful life events they had experienced in the prior 12 months along the dimensions of desirability, amount of change, anticipation, control, and meaningfulness. As hypothesized, androgynous subjects rated their stressful life events as less undesirable than oth…
Birth Order and Sex-Type
94 subjects were administered the Bem Sex-role Inventory and also asked whether they were first-, only-, or later-born children. A χ 2 test indicated that androgynous and masculine sex-typed subjects were more likely to be first- or only-born than feminine or undifferentiated subjects. Possible problems with the use of the Bem Sex-role Inventory for this type of research are also discussed
