Cynthia A Graham, Richard A Crosby et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2020

Objectives: Despite evidence that menstrual bleeding is a risk factor for sexually transmissible infections, few studies have assessed the prevalence of, and reasons for, condom use during menses. The objectives of the present study were to examine (1) the prevalence of condom use during menses; (2) if condom use during menses varies depending on age and gender inequality of country of residence; and (3) whether age and gender inequality of count…

The purpose of this qualitative study was twofold: (1) to describe the sexual risk behaviours of young tourism workers (TWs), and (2) to explore socio-contextual factors pertaining to safer sex among TWs. Banff, Canada was the study site. Twenty-nine TWs were recruited and interviewed i…

This paper explores how people ( n = 1,093) who identify as asexual or on the ace spectrum (i.e., graysexual, demisexual) define sex behaviorally using a list of 22 specific behaviors and assesses their lifetime behavioral histories and interest in future engagement in these activities. Lifetime behavioral history was also compared to each individual's personal definition of sex. Asexual, demisexual, and graysexual groups defined sex similarly. A…

  • Antecedents of Condom-Protected Oral Sex Among Young Black MSM

Richard A Crosby, Robin R Milhausen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sexual…•2017

Oral sex among men who have sex with men (MSM) is a common mode of STI transmission. This study identified the prevalence and antecedents of condom-protected oral sex among a sample of 526 young Black MSM having oral sex in the past 90 days. Men engaging in condomless anal receptive sex were less likely to report always using condoms for oral sex (p = .007). Men agreeing that “condoms help me have better sex” (p = .004) and those indicating alway…

  • Health and identity-related interactions between lesbian, bisexual, queer and pansexual women and their healthcare providers

Adrienne Baldwin, Brian Dodge et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2017

Disclosure of sexual identity among sexual minority women is related to better outcomes and improved quality of care. The existing literature on sexual minority women's experiences of identity disclosure and related interactions with healthcare providers draws little distinction between different groups of sexual minority women, despite the different barriers, stigma and health outcomes that exist between them. This paper presents factors influen…

  • Heterosexual Women’s and Men’s Labeling of Anal Behaviors as Having “Had Sex”

Kimberly R McBride, Stephanie A Sanders et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2017•References: 2

This study explored labeling of penile-anal intercourse (PAI), manual-anal (MA), and oral-anal (OA) behaviors as having "had sex" among heterosexual men and women with such experience residing in the United States (n = 3,218). Adult men and women completed an online questionnaire assessing sexual behaviors and whether each counted as having had sex. With the exception of anal intercourse, there was high variation in whether a behavior was labeled…

Robin R Milhausen, Alexander McKay et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Research suggests the relationship between pleasure and condom use during penile-vaginal intercourse (PVI) is associated with relationship status. This online study examined pleasure ratings and condom use at last PVI, stratifying by partner type, among a national sample of Canadian university students. Participants were 715 undergraduates (60.7% women, 39.3% men) who reported on their most recent sexual experience. Condom use decreased with leve…

Collecting information on sexual identity is critical to ensuring the visibility of minority populations who face stigmatization and discrimination related to sexual identities. However, it is challenging to capture the nuances of sexual identity with traditional survey research methods. Using a mixed-methods approach, we gathered data on the sexual identities of 80 behaviorally bisexual women in the Midwestern United States through an online sur…

In partnership with India's oldest and largest sexual and gender minority-advocacy organisation, the Humsafar Trust, our study used community-based participatory research principles to explore the lived experiences and health concerns of sexual minority women in Mumbai. Study methodologies includ…

  • Variability in Sex Attitudes and Sexual Histories Across Age Groups of Bisexual Women and Men in the United States

    Brandon J Hill, Stephanie A Sanders et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2016•References: 15

Data from 1,380 self-identified bisexual women and men age 18 to 70 living in the United States document significant diversity across age and gender in attitudes regarding which behaviors constitute “sex” and behavioral histories. With the exceptions of deep kissing, penile-vaginal intercourse, and penile-anal intercourse, the 18 to 29 age groups of both genders were significantly less likely to count all other behaviors (manual and oral stimulat…

  • In their own words

Margo Mullinax, Debby Herbenick et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Education•2015

Research increasingly shows genital attitudes have an impact on sexual well-being and health seeking behaviours. This study explored what women and men like and dislike about women's genitals. Data are from open-ended items, part of a cross-sectional Internet-based survey anonymously completed by 496 women and 198 men. Overall, both women and men had positive attitudes towards women's genitals, although there was overlap between likes and dislike…

A sizable minority of women report lifetime sexual behavior with both men and women. In the present study, a multinational sample of women who reported genital contact with at least one man and one woman in their lifetime (N = 2,751) were asked to provide their behavioral definitions of "having sex with a woman" and "having sex with a man." Replicating previous research, participants were asked "Would you say you 'had sex' with a woman/man if the…

  • Gender Differences in Heterosexual College Students' Conceptualizations and Indicators of Sexual Consent

Kristen N Jozkowski, Zoë D Peterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2013•Cited by: 98•References: 10

Because sexual assault is often defined in terms of nonconsent, many prevention efforts focus on promoting the clear communication of consent as a mechanism to reduce assault. Yet little research has specifically examined how sexual consent is being conceptualized by heterosexual college students. In this study, 185 Midwestern U.S. college students provided responses to open-ended questions addressing how they define, communicate, and interpret s…

  • The Dual Control Model

John Bancroft, Cynthia A Graham et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2009•Cited by: 44•References: 48

The Dual Control Model proposes that sexual responses involve an interaction between sexual excitatory and sexual inhibitory processes. The model further postulates that individuals vary in their propensity for both sexual excitation and sexual inhibition, and that such variations help us to understand much of the variability in human sexuality. The development of psychometrically validated instruments for measuring such propensities for men (Sex…
