What Happens at Reunions? Exploring Causal Connections and Their Role in Reunion Effects
Past research on anaphor resolution has investigated the availability of discourse information related to characters that part and reunite. Upon reunion, distant concepts that have been associated with the characters before they separated become more accessible than they were just before the reunion. This phenomenon has been referred to as the reunion effect and has been replicated across several studies. In an effort to explain the causes of thi…
Goal Plans of Action and Inferences During Comprehension of Narratives
Goal Plans of Action and Inferences During Comprehension of Narratives
A theory of how readers monitor concerns of characters and make causal inferences during reading is presented. The focus is on the reader's understanding of what characters do when goals either succeed or fail. Knowledge of goal processes enable coherent understanding to be achieved when characters change goal plans and pursue new courses of action. Four simulations of data from previously published studies on goal-related inferences during readi…
Evaluation during the understanding of narratives
Evaluation plays a role in the telling and understanding of narratives, in communicative interaction, emotional understanding, and in psychological well‐being. This article reports a study of evaluation by describing how readers monitor the concerns of characters over the course of a narrative. The main hypothesis is that readers tract the well‐being via the expression of a character's internal states. Reader evaluations were revealed in think al…
Appraisal and goal processes as predictors of psychological well-being in bereaved caregivers
Conscious understanding during comprehension
This study investigated conscious understanding during narrative comprehension as revealed through the use of think‐aloud methodology. An analytical model of conscious understanding is presented, which assumes that inference and memory processes function together in order to construct a coherent, mental representation of a text. Three working memory operations were operationally identified in the think‐aloud protocols: (1) activation of relevant …
Constructing inferences during narrative text comprehension.
The authors describe a constructionist theory that accounts for the knowledge-based inferences that are constructed when readers comprehend narrative text. Readers potentially generate a rich variety of inferences when they construct a referential situation model of what the text is about. The proposed constructionist theory specifies that some, but not all, of this information is constructed under most conditions of comprehension. The distinctiv…
Understanding text
The question of whether global, causal inferences are made during comprehension is studied following a three‐pronged approach. First, potential inferences were first identified a priori in texts generated by the causal network model for narrative discourse. Second, verbal protocol data in the form of "talking aloud" during the reading of sentences in stories were used to evaluate whether or not people made the predicted inferences. The global, ca…
The development of goal plans of action in the narration of a picture story
The construction of coherent narrations of events in a picture storybook by children was studied. A causal network discourse analysis (Trabasso, van den Broek, & Suh, 1989) was applied to the narrations by children, 3, 4, 5, and 9 years in age, and adults, 20 years and older. The analysis was successfully applied at the clausal level by deriving interacting causal network representations for the perspective of each character in each of the narrat…
Comprehension Processes in Reading
Logical necessity and transitivity of causal relations in stories
central concern of this study is the problem of identifying inferences that connect units in narrative discourse. A recursive transition network model is described that analyzes and represents a story as a causal network of categorized clauses and labeled relations. Procedural criteria used to identify inferences and the assumptions that inferences operate over distances in the text and are transitive, resulting in a network representation, are t…
Causal networks versus goal hierarchies in summarizing text∗
The importance of a statement in a story was investigated, contrasting two alternative approaches to story understanding: hierarchical vs. causal. The importance of a statement was operationalized in terms of the statement's being included in a summary. Goal‐statements across versions of a story were varied in their hierarchical level. In addition, the causal‐chain status and the number of direct causal connections for goal and other statements w…
