  • Self-Transcendent Emotions and Their Social Functions: Compassion, Gratitude, and Awe Bind Us to Others Through Prosociality

    Open Access•Jennifer E Stellar, Amie M Gordon et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion Review•2017

In this article we review the emerging literature on the self-transcendent emotions. We discuss how the self-transcendent emotions differ from other positive emotions and outline the defining features of this category. We then provide an analysis of three specific self-transcendent emotions—compassion, gratitude, and awe—detailing what has been learned about their expressive behavior, physiology, and likely evolutionary origins. We propose that t…

  • Awe, the diminished self, and collective engagement: Universals and cultural variations in the small self

Yang Bai, Laura A Maruskin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2017•Cited by: 34•References: 21

Awe has been theorized as a collective emotion, one that enables individuals to integrate into social collectives. In keeping with this theorizing, we propose that awe diminishes the sense of self and shifts attention away from individual interests and concerns. In testing this hypothesis across 6 studies (N = 2137), we first validate pictorial and verbal measures of the small self; we then document that daily, in vivo, and lab experiences of awe…

  • Writer–reader contagion of inspiration and related states: Conditional process analyses within a cross-classified writer × reader framework

    Open Access•Todd M Thrash, Laura A Maruskin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 7

A longstanding tradition in the humanities holds that a writer's inspiration is infectious, but this thesis has not been tested. We hypothesized that (a) inspiration is infectious, such that inspired writers are more inspiring to the average reader; (b) contagion is mediated by the insightfulness of the text; and (c) contagion is moderated by readers' openness to experience, such that open readers are more prone to contagion. To test these hypoth…

  • The chills as a psychological construct: Content universe, factor structure, affective composition, elicitors, trait antecedents, and consequences

Laura A Maruskin, Todd M Thrash et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2012•Cited by: 4

We examined the content universe, factor structure, affective composition, elicitors, trait antecedents, and consequences of "the chills." In Study 1, participants described what it means to get the chills. A second sample sorted all references to physical sensations based on similarity. Cluster analysis identified 4 lower order clusters (goosebumps, tingling, coldness, shivers) and 2 higher order clusters ("goosetingles," "coldshivers"). In Stud…

  • Inspiration and the promotion of well-being: Tests of causality and mediation

Todd M Thrash, Andrew J Elliot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2010•Cited by: 11

The influence of inspiration on well-being was examined in 4 studies. In Study 1, experimental manipulation of exposure to extraordinary competence increased positive affect, and inspiration accounted for this effect. In Study 2, trait inspiration predicted an increase in positive hedonic and eudaimonic well-being variables (positive affect, life satisfaction, vitality, and self-actualization) across a 3-month period, even when the Big 5 traits, …

  • Mediating between the muse and the masses: Inspiration and the actualization of creative ideas

Todd M Thrash, Laura A Maruskin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2010•Cited by: 3

Within the creativity domain, inspiration is a motivational state posited to energize the actualization of creative ideas. The authors examined the construct validity, predictive utility, and function of inspiration in the writing process. Study 1, a cross-lagged panel study, showed that getting creative ideas and being inspired are distinct and that the former precedes the latter. In Study 2, inspiration, at the between-person level, predicted t…
