Trauma history in African-American women living with HIV
Women living with HIV (WLHIV) have rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) up to 5 times higher than the general population. Individuals living with HIV and a concurrent diagnosis of PTSD have poorer HIV-related outcomes; however, the prevalence and impact of PTSD on African-American WLHIV seeking mental health treatment is unknown. The aim of this study is to examine the associations between PTSD symptoms with psychiatric symptom severity…
Negative Religious Coping as a Mediator of Trauma Symptoms in Older Survivors
Forty-three spiritually distressed older women (aged 55–83) who had survived multiple types of interpersonal trauma participated in a spiritually focused group intervention designed to address spiritual struggles related to earlier abuse and to enhance spiritual coping. It was hypothesized that the intervention would increase spiritual well-being and that religious/spiritual coping would mediate the relationship between the intervention and the o…
Religious coping, stigma, and psychological functioning among HIV-positive African American women
The present study examined the role of religious coping in psychological distress and adjustment both cross-sectionally and longitudinally among 141 HIV-positive African American women. Cross-sectional analyses showed that negative religious coping was associated with poorer mental health and functioning, and greater perceptions of stigma and discrimination. Longitudinal analyses revealed that greater negative religious coping at baseline signifi…
Moving toward Trauma-Informed Practice in Addiction Treatment
Clients in substance abuse treatment need, in addition to evidence-based and sensitive treatment services in general, a system of care that takes into account the impact of trauma and violence in so many of their lives. In addition, services need to be delivered in a way that avoids triggering trauma memories or causing unintentional re-traumatization. To that end, this article describes an agency self-assessment process that combines a trauma-in…
Evaluation of a Spiritually Focused Intervention with Older Trauma Survivors
This study evaluated the effectiveness of an 11-session, spiritually focused group intervention with older women survivors (age 55 years and older) of interpersonal trauma (child abuse, sexual assault, or domestic violence) in reducing trauma-related depressive symptoms, posttraumatic stress, and anxiety. Forty-three community-dwelling women survivors of interpersonal trauma were randomized into treatment (n = 21) or control (n = 22) groups. Part…
Trauma‐informed or trauma‐denied
In this article, we attempt to bridge the gap between practice (service delivery) and philosophy (trauma theory, empowerment, and relational theory). Specifically, we identify 10 principles that define trauma‐informed service, discuss the need for this type of service, and give some characteristics of trauma‐informed services in eight different human service areas. The areas include outreach and engagement, screening and assessment, resource coor…
Implementing Trauma-Informed Alcohol and Other Drug and Mental Health Services for Women
On the basis of the 9-site, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-funded Women, Co-Occurring Disorders, and Violence Study, this article discusses recommendations for implementing trauma-informed mental health, substance abuse, and other support services. These guidelines for best practices represent the consensus of a diverse trauma work group that drew on both cross-site and site-specific qualitative data
The Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM)
Envisioning a trauma‐informed service system
With the recognition that large numbers of men and women receiving services in the mental health and addictions systems are the survivors of sexual and physical abuse, practitioners need to become informed about the dynamics and the aftermath of trauma.
HIV risk-behavior in poor urban women with serious mental disorders
Associations between childhood sexual and physical abuse and HIV-related risky behavior were examined among low-income, urban women with severe mental disorders. Early sexual abuse was found to be related to adult sexual and physical assault, alcohol and cocaine abuse, and prostitution; childhood physical abuse was related to adult physical assault and alcohol abuse. Findings highlight the importance of making HIV risk-reduction programs a part o…
