Teaching the Elegiac Lover in Ovid’s Amores
This paper explores the evolution of views of Ovid’s elegiac lover. To counteract the tendency to define Ovid as a poet whose humor and irony were weaknesses, recent approaches have explored the complexities of Ovid’s lover, seeing him as both dominated by his puella and as her shrewd manipulator, a true desultor amoris . The paper summarizes five different approaches to the Amores (those of Paul Veyne, J. T. Davis, Barbara Weiden Boyd, Ellen Gre…

Raising Feminists
This article considers the reasons for raising feminist children, how this concept might be operationalized, and what the correlates of such gender-flexible patterns might be. The data pertinent to gender-role acquisition and gender flexibility are drawn from an ongoing longitudinal study of over 200 children and their families that originated when the children were 6 months of age and continues until they enter school at age 6. Results suggest t…
Developmental aspects of gender role flexibility and traditionality in middle childhood and adolescence
This study (a) explored developmental patterns of gender traditionality and flexibility in 479 Ss across middle childhood and early and late adolescence and (b) assessed the correlates of gender flexibility at these 3 developmental periods. Gender flexibility was differentiated into 2 dependent variables: self-related and tolerance toward flexibiIity in others. Varying theoretical developmental trends have been posited with regard to gender flexi…
Women, Psychology, and Social Issues Research
This article reviews the history of women psychologists' contributions to social issues research. The first part describes the work of a few remarkable women in the early part of the century whose scientific participation and feminist orientations were equally unusual. It then focuses on the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI), which was founded in 1937, and traces the various stages of women's participation in it, beginn…
Mastery motivation in boys and girls: The role of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation
Maladaptive Achievement Patterns in Students: The Role of Teachers' Controlling Strategies
Guided by a theoretical model of academic achievement, the studies described here employed a multimethod approach to explore the interplay of factors that lead some children to strive harder in the face of failure and others to exhibit a maladaptive “helpless” response pattern. Converging evidence from laboratory and field research demonstrates that children with extrinsic motivational styles are more susceptible to helpless behavior, particularl…

Children's preference for challenge: The role of perceived competence and control
This research tested the hypothesis that children's perceptions of academic competence and their personal control over school-related performance affects subsequent intrinsic interest and preference for challenge in an evaluative setting. In a correlational study, children's self-reported perceptions of academic competence and personal control were found to relate positively to their intrinsic interest in schoolwork and preference for challenging…
Variations in family constellation: Effects on gender schemata
Assumptions have often been made that gender stereotypes unfold in children with little variation in content or sequence. But children's gender schemata do differ. What family characteristics influence these different outcomes
