  • Race, Science and a Novel

Open Access•Lawrence R Burns, LAWRENCE BURNS et al.•ARTICLE•Developing World Bioethics•2008

In the novel Racists by Kunal Basu (2006), two competing scientists initiate an experiment that they believe will prove which race is superior. The research subjects, one white and one black infant, are sequestered on an isolated island in the care of a mute nurse. The contest must be waged in a ‘natural laboratory’ with no artificial interventions and with the prospect that one will die at the hands of the other. The politics of empire, the slav…

  • Identifying concrete ethical demands in the face of the abstract other

    Open Access•Lawrence R Burns, LAWRENCE BURNS•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Critics of Levinas reject the notion that the abstract face of the other can ground ethics and generate specific responsibilities. To the contrary, I argue that the face does ground a practical and pragmatic ethics. Drawing on Levinas' phenomenological analyses of the enjoying subject, I show that the face communicates an imperative to the subject that obligates her or him to repair the concrete context of action in which the subject encounters t…

  • Spontaneous emotion regulation during evaluated speaking tasks

Boris Egloff, Stefan C Schmukle et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2006

In these studies, the correlates of spontaneously using expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal during stressful speeches were examined. Spontaneous emotion regulation means that there were no instructions of how to regulate emotions during the speech. Instead, participants indicated after the speech to what extent they used self-motivated expressive suppression or reappraisal during the task. The results show that suppression is associa…

  • Facets of Dynamic Positive Affect

Boris Egloff, Stefan C Schmukle et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 43

This article proposes the differentiation of Joy, Interest, and Activation in the Positive Affect (PA) scale of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; D. Watson, L. A. Clark, & A. Tellegen, 1988). Study 1 analyzed the dynamic course of PA before, during, and after an exam and established the differentiation of the three facets. Study 2 used a multistate-multitrait analysis to confirm this structure. Studies 3-5 used success-failure exp…

  • The relationship between positive and negative affect in the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule

  • Derrida and the promise of community

    Open Access•Lawrence R Burns, LAWRENCE BURNS•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2001•References: 1

This paper offers a critique of Derrida's deconstruction of the promise on the grounds that it does not adequately account for the ethical constitution of the promise in the pragmatic context of face-to-face dialogue. Instead, Derrida focuses on the way in which the promise opens the horizon of interpretation or readability for an indefinite community of readers. Derrida's view is explicated at length, drawing on Limited Inc, Le monolinguisme de …
