No evidence of a curvilinear relation between conscientiousness and relationship, work, and health outcomes
Across 2 studies and 4 samples (Ns = 8,332, 2,136, 4,963, and 753, respectively), we tested whether the relation between conscientiousness and variables associated with important aspects of individuals' lives were curvilinear such that being high on conscientiousness was manifestly negative. Across multiple outcomes including measures of health, well-being, relationship satisfaction, job satisfaction, and organizational citizenship, we found no e…

Detecting differential item functioning with confirmatory factor analysis and item response theory: Toward a unified strategy.
In this article, the authors developed a common strategy for identifying differential item functioning (DIF) items that can be implemented in both the mean and covariance structures method (MACS) and item response theory (IRT). They proposed examining the loadings (discrimination) and the intercept (location) parameters simultaneously using the likelihood ratio test with a free-baseline model and Bonferroni corrected critical p values. They compa…
The Structure of Conscientiousness: An Empirical Investigation Based on Seven Major Personality Questionnaires
The purpose of this study was to identify the underlying structure of the trait domain of Conscientiousness using scales drawn from 7 major personality inventories. Thirty‐six scales conceptually related to Conscientiousness were administered to a large community sample ( N = 737); analyses of those scales revealed a hierarchical structure with 6 factors: industriousness, order, self‐control, responsibility, traditionalism, and virtue. All 6 fact…
A lexical investigation of the lower-order structure of conscientiousness
Investigating the Hierarchical Factor Structure of the Fifth Edition of the 16PF: An Application of the Schmid-Leiman Orthogonalization Procedure
Two issues regarding the factor structure of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) Fifth Edition were investigated: (a) unidimensionality of the 16 noncognitive scales and (b) hierarchical factor structure of the inventory. The Schmid and Leiman orthogonalization procedure was applied to obtain a hierarchical factor solution in which multi-item composites were mapped directly onto first- and second-order orthogonal factors while sim…
Fitting Item Response Theory Models to Two Personality Inventories: Issues and Insights
The present study compared the fit of several IRT models to two personality assessment instruments. Data from 13,059 individuals responding to the US-English version of the Fifth Edition of the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF) and 1,770 individuals responding to Goldberg's 50 item Big Five Personality measure were analyzed. Various issues pertaining to the fit of the IRT models to personality data were considered. We examined two o…
How Selective are Psychology Graduate Programs? the Effect of the Selection Ratio on Gre Score Validity
This study examined the selection ratio for 253 doctorate-level psychology programs. On average, the selection ratio for psychology Ph.D. programs was .11 ( SD = .12). This information was used to estimate the existing range restriction on General Record Examination (GRE) scores in validation studies. Results of the investigation showed the importance of correcting for range restriction in GRE validation research. The low selection ratio of gradu…
