This paper explores the events of September 11, 2001 through the learning optic. What lessons did an infuriated segment of the Arab world try to teach the West? Did the USA learn anything profound from these events? How should critical adult educators think about the connection between these events, mounting global anarchy and the US–UK invasion of Iraq in March 2003
Listening, conflict and citizenship
This paper argues that listening is a seriously neglected theme in adult education theory and contemporary philosophy. It postulates that critical reflection on listening is particularly salient in our world of manifest socio-economic inequality, cultural conflict and adversarialness. This paper contends that we learn to listen, and that political listening can be usefully understood as a pedagogical practice of democratic citizenship. Listening …

This article argues that Jürgen Habermas's commitment to a deliberative form of democracy, the foundational importance of the lifeworld for healthy human existence, and civil society as the pre-eminent learning domain can help the global adult education movement to understand its potentialities and limitations in a rapidly changing world.
