Competition and childcare quality
Since 1997, the Canadian province of Quebec has put in place a heavily subsidized universal childcare program for all children under the school age. The present paper examines how the level of competition among individual providers associates with the quality of childcare in Quebec. The quality of childcare is measured by the number of violations and penalties recorded in the inspections conducted by the Quebec Ministry of Family Affairs. The ana…
The perils of returning to school—New insights into the impact of school holidays on youth suicides
Candidate–Evaluator Similarity, Favouritism, Informational Advantage, and Committee Dynamics
This article examines the assessment of 2004 and 2005 Canadian national scholarship candidates by multidisciplinary subcommittees. First, it shows weak evidence of slight favouritism by evaluators in the same discipline as the candidate. Second, same-discipline evaluator scores predict candidates’ future success (proxied by becoming a university professor 10 years later) better than do different-discipline evaluator scores from the same subcommit…
Environmental Impact of Public Transit
This article takes advantage of an unusually long strike (51 days) in Ottawa to study the environmental impact of public transit. Overall, we find a robust significant increase in the concentration of particulate matter (PM) and ozone (O 3 ) and a decrease in the concentration of nitrogen oxide (NO) during the strike on workdays between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The first two effects are probably due to an increase in car traffic during the strike,…
Do Evaluators Prefer Candidates of Their Own Gender
Increasing the number of female evaluators could help female candidates if evaluators prefer candidates of their own gender. I study whether there is any evidence of such preferences with a unique data set containing 10,500 scores given by 105 evaluators to 3,500 students in the humanities and social sciences who applied for a doctoral scholarship. On average, I find very weak evidence of same-gender preferences for male evaluators ( p = 0.133). …
The Effectiveness and Distributional Effects of the Tax Credit for Public Transit
This article studies the impact of a non-refundable tax credit for public transit introduced in July 2006 in Canada. I find no evidence that this tax credit increased the number of trips made using public transit. There is, however, some suggestive evidence that it did induce commuters to purchase monthly passes. Finally, the article discusses the distributional effect of this tax credit
