Covid-19 Stories from the Swedish Welfare State: The Pandemicracy
Waking Up to a New World
Booming opportunities and looming challenges? Expansion strategies among finance-controlled providers in the field of Swedish eldercare
The financialisation of eldercare has become an internationally widespread phenomenon with significant implications. Previous literature has shown how finance-controlled providers (FCPs) initially launch their eldercare services throughout urban areas, but we know little about the ways that these providers subsequently expand their services. Focusing on nursing homes in Swedish eldercare, our aim with this paper is to develop new knowledge about …
Producing and sustaining field-configuring events: The role of prizes in a Swedish Book Fair
We approach field-configuring events (FCEs) as gatherings that engender formative moments in the trajectory of technologies, professions, or industries. Previous research has focused on the field-level consequences of FCEs, implying we still know little about how these events are produced and sustained. Our aim in this paper is concomitantly to theorize the particular role of prizes as elements that help produce and sustain FCEs. Drawing on a qua…
Under the Influence of Politics: Mediatisation and politico-administrative systems in Scandinavia
This conceptual article extends three ongoing scholarly debates on the mediatisation of politics – the risk of media centrism, the tendency to see mediatisation as a linear process, and the preoccupation with elected officials. We argue for the need to identify, foreground, and systematise non-media dimensions of mediatisation processes. We also argue that actors encounter mediatisation as a set of dynamic ideas rather than a fixed logic. With a …
Diverging Principles for Strategic Communication in Government Agencies
The aim of this article is to analyze how public agencies deal with strategic communication and how it gets redefined and reformulated in relation to rules, norms, and ideas permeating different contexts. Research on strategic communication tends to oversee such differences and what consequences they have for what it is that mobilizes the use of communication in various settings. Informed by an increasing literature on organizational institutiona…
Characteristics of Public Sectors and Their Consequences for Strategic Communication
Research on strategic communication often deals with a general idea of organizations without specifications of what type of organization it sets under investigation. However, it often focuses on markets and perceives “corporations” as its role model. This means that the certain conditions that applies to other sectors—such as the public sector- tends to be overseen. Even though these conditions have extensive consequences for how, when, where, an…
Determinants of Organizational Mediatization: An Analysis of the Adaptation of Swedish Government Agencies to News Media
This article seeks to explain why the media affect some governmental agencies more than others. We develop a measuring instrument for the mediatization of agencies; gauging how they adapt to the media. We analyse the effects of six potential explanations of mediatization: media pressure, organizational size and task, salience, geographic location, and management structure. The analysis is based on a comprehensive quantitative contents analysis of…
Corporate media work and micro-dynamics of mediatization
Recent analysis of interactions and relations between media, individuals and organizations is commonly based on the notion of mediatization. Research in journalism and media studies, political studies as well as business studies has explored mediatization as prevailing transformation influencing communication activities of individuals as well as organizations. In the field of organizational studies an increasing interest has been paid to the medi…
Beyond the news desk – the embeddedness of business news
The relations between the media and their corporate sources have become increasingly routinized and organized. In contrast to traditional perspectives on news making this article introduces an embeddedness perspective on business journalism and reports on the findings from a study of the way the major Swedish corporations and financial analysts contribute to and participate in the production of business news. Through a qualitative analysis of two…
