  • Testing the presence of cereal-type pollen grains in coastal pre-Elm Decline peat deposits: Fine-resolution palynology at Roudsea Wood, Cumbria, UK

    Open Access•James B Innés, Mairead Rutherford et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 39

By the time of the Mid-Holocene Ulmus pollen decline (UD) ca. 5100 14 C bp (ca. 5900 cal. BP), the Neolithic was becoming well established in Britain and Ireland. The importance of cereal cultivation as part of the initial neolithization process in the British Isles is uncertain, as archaeological sites of the first Neolithic remain elusive. Palaeoecologists have recorded cereal-type pollen grains in peat deposits that pre-date the UD significant…

  • He just gave up’: An exploratory study into the perspectives of paid carers on supporting older people living in care homes with depression, self-harm, and suicide ideation and behaviours

    Open Access•Trish Hafford‐letchfield, Helen Gleeson et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2020•References: 19

This study explored the concept of ‘giving up’ from the perspective of care staff working in care homes, and their everyday communication and hidden knowledge concerning what they think about this taboo topic and the context it reflects. Moving to a care home is a major transition where cumulative losses can pose risks to mental health in later life. If not recognised, this vulnerability can lead to depression which extends to suicide ideation an…

  • UV-B-absorbing compounds in modern Cedrus atlantica pollen: The potential for a summer UV-B proxy for Northwest Africa

    Open Access•Benjamin A Bell, William J Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•References: 1

Sporopollenin is a complex biopolymer which is the main component of the pollen grain exine and is partly composed of the aromatic compounds para-coumaric acid ( pCA) and ferulic acid (FA). These compounds absorb ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280–315 nm), and their abundance in pollen and spores has been shown to increase in response to increased UV-B flux. Here, we show that the relative abundance of UV-B-absorbing compounds (UACs) measured usi…

  • The 2017 Women's March: A National Study of Solidarity Events

Kraig Beyerlein, Peter Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Mobilization An International…•2018•Cited by: 7

On January 21, 2017, over four hundred cities across the United States organized sister marches in solidarity with the Women's March on Washington. In this paper, we first compare the size of these marches to that of several significant protest-event sources to show how extraordinary turnout was that day. Then, analyzing a nationally representative sample of sister marches, we present univariate statistics for both event-level characteristics (su…

  • Religious Resistance to Trump: Progressive Faith and the Women's March on Chicago

    Open Access•Kraig Beyerlein, Peter Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Religion•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 15

Progressive faith communities joined the hundreds of thousands of others who took to the streets in downtown Chicago on January 21, 2017 to protest the Trump regime. The Women’s March on Chicago (WMC) provides an opportunity to shed new light on religious resistance given its unique features. Unlike protests in prior studies of progressive faith-based activism, the WMC was a secular event, involving little costs and risks, and for which religious…

  • Rights through Alliances: Findings from a European Project Tackling Homophobic and Transphobic Bullying in Schools through the Engagement of Families and Young People

    Trish Hafford-Letchfield, Trish Hafford‐letchfield et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2016•References: 16

This paper draws on findings from a European project, ‘Rights through Alliances: Innovating and Networking Both Within Homes And Schools’ (RAINBOW-HAS), conducted in 2013–15. It built collaboration between six EU countries to analyse and improve the rights of children and youth regarding sexual orientation and gender identity in educational settings. The main focus of discussion derives from a secondary discourse analysis following thematic analy…

  • Microscopic fungi as subfossil woodland indicators

Open Access•Jonathan GA Lageard, Peter Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•References: 13

An in situ subfossil oak trunk located on the Lancashire coastal plain in northwest England provided a unique opportunity for a detailed multiproxy investigation attempting to link precisely macrofossil evidence for a palaeowoodland to its microfossil depositional record. Dendrochronological analyses revealed that the tree died shortly after 4189 bc and that it was part of a mire-rooting woodland between 4433 and 4165 bc. Rising water levels are …

Open Access•Tim Greacen, Emmanuelle Jouet et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

Shulamit Ramon, Peter Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The article will outline the logic, parameters, and methodology of an attempt at mainstreaming ethnicity within EMILIA, an EU 6th FP multi-sites project focused on mental health and social inclusion over two years. Led by two social work researchers within a large multi-disciplinary group consisting of eight sites spread across Southern, Central and Northern Europe, alongside mainstreaming gender, we will look at the findings of the baseline audi…

Peter Ryan, R Ford et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•1999•Cited by: 5

This article summarizes the main results and policy implications of a Department of Health funded mental health case management research and development project. The project implemented case management services in four different sites, and worked with clients who were severely disabled with long-term mental illness. Higher levels of engagement (95 per cent) were achieved by case-managed as compared to control clients. They were also linked to a w…

  • Living without the Mental Hospitals

Open Access•Sheila Hewett, Peter Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Policy•1975•References: 4

Changes in the administrative structure of the National Health Service and in policy concerning the role of the psychiatric hospitals in the delivery of mental health care mean that local authorities have a growing responsibility for providing a range of supportive services for people who formerly would have lived for long periods in mental hospitals. Sheltered living environments will be an essential part of these services but there is little sy…
