Gender and Parenthood Differences in Job Mobility and Pay Progression in the UK
Understanding disparities in the rates at which men and women's wages grow over the life course is critical to explaining the gender pay gap. Using panel data from 2009 to 2019 for the United Kingdom, we examine how differences in the rates and types of job mobility of men and women-with and without children-influence the evolution of wages. We contrast the rates and wage returns associated with different types of job moves, including moving empl…
Impact of Equity in Social Protection Spending on Income Poverty and Inequality
This study aims to investigate whether higher equity in government social protection spending strongly predicts positive changes in income poverty and inequality. Our approach was to regress the measures of absolute poverty and inequality on the indicators of equity in social protection spending at the country level, controlling for the level of spending and the country wealth measured by per capita GDP. For that purpose, we have compiled a datas…
The place of impositions in the meaning typology
The paper reviews the notion of the imposition introduced in the paradigm of dynamic semantics. An imposition is an informative and automatic update of the common ground or the context set. This type of context update is associated with appositive clauses, evidential markers, parenthetical constructions. An imposition encodes the discourse behavior of its bearer, which allows us to examine the interplay between the semantic representation of an e…
Do taxes and transfers reduce gender income inequality? Evidence from eight European welfare states
We examine how taxes and transfers affect the incomes of men and women. Using microsimulation and intra-household income splitting rules, we measure the differences in the level and composition of individual disposable income by gender in eight European countries covering various welfare regime types. We quantify the extent to which taxes and transfers can counterbalance the gender gap in earnings, as well as which policy instruments contribute m…
Second Earners and In-Work Poverty in Europe
Dual or multiple earnership has been considered an important factor to prevent in-work poverty. The aim of this paper is to quantify the impact of second earnership on the risk of in-work poverty and the role of the tax-benefit system in moderating this risk. Our analysis refers to 2014 and employs EUROMOD, the tax-benefit microsimulation model for the European Union and the United Kingdom. In order to assess the role of second earners in prevent…

Distributional impact of taxes and social transfers in Russia over the downturn
Low oil prices and the recession in Russia which started in 2014 are increasing pressures for fiscal consolidation, after more than a decade of prosperity. This article assesses the distributional impact of the main tax and social spending programmes in Russia in 2014 by applying a state-of-the-art incidence analysis. Overall, the Russian welfare state achieves a moderate reduction in inequality through tax-benefit policies by international stand…
Distributional impacts of cash allowances for children
This article analyses programmes of cash allowances for children and compares their effectiveness in combating child poverty in Russia and four European Union (EU) countries representing alternative family policy models – Sweden, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Using microsimulation models, this article estimates the potential gains if the Russian system were re-designed along the policy parameters of these countries and vice versa. The …

The impact of the gender composition of households on inequality and poverty
This study compares poverty and income distribution among gender subgroups in Russia and four East European countries—Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Poland—in 2000. Does the gender poverty gap exist in these countries and if yes, how big is it? How much does the level of gender inequality contribute to explaining the level of aggregate inequality and poverty within each country? To what extent may the differences emerging in cross-country compari…
