  • The uneven and combined development of racial capitalism and South Africa’s changing race-class articulations

    Sam Ashman•ARTICLE•Global Political Economy•2023

Surprisingly little uneven and combined development (UCD) work focuses on Africa. This article both widens the geographical scope of UCD literature and attempts to address a major blind spot in this literature: the importance of race and gender in understanding the UCD of world capitalism and global political economy. Helpful in this process, we argue, is an engagement with the work of Black Marxism and Marxist Feminism and the literature on Raci…

  • Radical Perspectives on Industrial Policy

Sam Ashman, Susan Newman et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Industrial…•2020

This chapter surveys, evaluates, and develops radical perspectives on industrial policy. We examine the differences between mainstream and heterodox approaches to economic and industrial development, and we look at the similarities and differences between structuralist and Marxist approaches. We argue that Marx’s concern is not with sectors but with value and the overall circuit of capital. Radical industrial policy foregrounds class and capitali…

  • The Social Crisis of Labour and the Crisis of Labour Politics in South Africa

    Sam Ashman•ARTICLE•Tiers-Monde•2015•References: 3

  • Economics and Political Economy Today

    Sam Ashman•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2012•References: 2

Economics has long been the ‘dismal science’. The crisis in classical political economy at the end of the nineteenth century produced radically differing intellectual responses: Marx’s reconstitution of value theory on the basis of his dialectical method, the marginalists’ development of subjective value theory, and the historical school’s advocacy of inductive and historical reasoning. It is against this background that economics was established…

  • Amnesty International? The Nature, Scale and Impact of Capital Flight from South Africa

Sam Ashman, Ben Fine et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2011•Cited by: 7

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) announced in July 2010 its intention to introduce a new amnesty for illegal capital flight. For a flat rate fee of 10 per cent of the value of the assets, corporations and individuals disclosing their illegal expatriation of capital prior to February 2010 would receive no further penalties and be allowed to keep their assets offshore under the ‘Voluntary Disclosure Programme’ (VDP). SARB sees this as a first …

  • Capitalism, uneven and combined development and the transhistoric

    Sam Ashman•ARTICLE•Cambridge Review of International…•2009•Cited by: 35•References: 19

What is the status of Trotsky's notion of uneven and combined development within Marxist theory and how might it be fruitfully employed by Marxists in international relations? Is uneven and combined development a transhistoric general abstraction or does it need rooting in the relations, processes, tendencies and counter-tendencies of a particular mode of production? This article rejects Justin Rosenberg's recently drawn conclusion that uneven an…

  • Resistance to Neoliberal Globalisation

    Open Access•Sam Ashman•ARTICLE•Politics•2004•Cited by: 14•References: 16

This article seeks to help redress the relative lack of discussion of the movement against neoliberal globalisation and the relative lack of empirical work about this movement. Firstly it argues that this movement is not opposed to globalisation per se but instead is developing a new internationalism in the course of challenging the neoliberal nature of contemporary globalisation. Secondly it argues that this challenge is producing a universalisi…
