The intersection of gender, rurality, income and school track in the university access mathematics tests scores
Educational inequalities in access to higher education are constituted by multiple intersecting factors that impact equity and the pursuit of tertiary studies. This study seeks to explore the disparities related to gender, socioeconomic level, rurality or urbanicity, and academic trajectory of 202,688 Chilean students who graduated from high school in 2016, to elucidate how these variables generate intersections that impact access to higher educa…
The Power of Diversity
We examine how inter-class relationships shape attitudes towards inequality. Our theoretical frame defines attitudes towards inequality as ethical dispositions and hypothesises that class-based network diversity may favour the development of what has been termed a 'reflexive habitus' that likely pushes for more egalitarian dispositions. The focus of our enquiry is on Chile - one of the most unequal countries in the world. We use large-scale repre…
Education and the production of inequalities across the Global South and North
Education is an essential aspect of any society in the world. As such, it has been a topic studied by many sociologists since the origins of the discipline. Today it is one of the most common subjects in sociology, in part because it has been recognised as a crucial environment for the (re)production of inequalities. This article explores the role of education in the (re)production of social inequalities and its potential to challenge such inequa…
Self-segregation strategies through school choice in Chile
Sociological research has shown that marketized educational systems favour middle-class families' self-segregation strategies through school choice and, consequently, the reproduction of their social advantage over poorer families. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of capitals, habitus and strategy, we analyse quantitative and ethnographic data on parents' school choice from Chile to introduce nuances to this argument, evincing more extended …
