Psychological sequelae of political imprisonment during apartheid
The devastation that accompanied the implementation of apartheid necessitated extreme resilience to withstand personal loss, wide-scale imprisonment, and destruction of community. The brutality of this process has been extensively documented, but the psychological consequences of apartheid have received scant attention. This article explores the psychological injuries sustained during apartheid and the role of psychology in its amelioration and e…
Early South African engagement with international psychology
South African psychology has been informed by international trends in psychology from its earliest inception. South African psychologists, such as Joseph Wolpe and Arnold Lazarus, have also influenced international trends in psychology. Jan Christiaan Smuts’s contributions to psychology and the high esteem in which he was held by Adler, Koffka, and Perls are little known. Adler facilitated the translation of Smuts’s first book in German and felt …
Unwanted Early Sexual Experiences Among Male University Students in Belgium and South Africa
This study compared the unwanted early sexual experiences (UESE) of Belgian and South African first-year male university students. A self-report checklist was administered to all consenting students attending an orientation programme at a Belgian and a South African University. Respondents were 1,017 Belgians (M. age = 18.3, SD = 1.63) and 335 South Africans (M. age = 19.3, SD = 3.40). Of the Belgian respondents 12.3% (N = 125) reported UESE comp…
The Imminent Demise of South African (SA) Psychology: A Response to Kagee (2006a,b) and Kagee (2009)
In commentary on Kagee (2006a), Swartz (2006) points out that while decrying the lack of empirical evidence in South African clinical psychology, Kagee (2006a) himself does not provide any such evidence for his sweeping statements that SA psychology has become increasingly devoid of an empirical base and that South African mental health professionals have failed to incorporate empirical findings in their clinical work. Swartz (2006) considers thi…

An Evaluation of Psychological Reports in the Amnesty Report of the Trc Revisited: A Response to J.H. Robbertze
Extracted from text ... S. Afr. J. Psychol. 2001, 31 (4) 75 In Prof Robbertze's comment he emphatically stated that memory disturbance is a core symptom of PTSD. I agree and wonder that he sees no contradiction in his psychiatric report where he contends that: 'Die kern van die siekte is 'n versteuring in the berging en herroeping van geheue tenopsigte van die traumatiese gebeure' (p1) 'The core of the illness is a disturbance in the storage and …
Cognitive Dissonance, de Kock and Odd Psychological Testimony
In the criminal trial of Eugene de Kock, aspects of his murderous rampage were attributed to his purported experience of cognitive dissonance (CD), emotional blunting and posttraumatic stress disorder. This paper will critique the use of CD in this particular case and explore the theoretical underpinnings of CD. A few examples from the court record will be used to illustrate the place of CD in explaining perpetrators' actions
Expert Witness Testimony in the Criminal Trial of Eugene de Kock: A Critique of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Defence
The Diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was presented as the core testimony in mitigation of sentence in the Eugene de Kock criminal trial. Several hundred pages of expert witness testimony were assessed and the difficulties of diagnosing PTSD for forensic determination, especially when the client is familiar with the usually well-publicised symptoms, are presented. The obligation of expert witnesses to remain objective, testify wit…
Psychological Testimony during the Amnesty Application of Jeffrey Theodore Benzien
This paper provides an analysis of the psychological testimony in an amnesty application to the TRC based on the court record. Arguing that PTSD and its diagnostic criteria has become so well known that the DSTMIV caution regarding malingering and benefit eligibility should be given greater weight during psychological testimony than has occurred. Especially where potential beneficiaries of testimony have repeatedly perjured themselves even greate…
An Evaluation of Psychological Reports Considered in the Amnesty Process of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission
An evaluation of the summary and individual psychological reports on five perpetrators of human rights violations were made. The reports overwhelmingly focused on postraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) even where the diagnosis was clearly not warranted and tried to dissuade the court from trying to elicit full disclosure of human rights violations, arguing that it would have detrimental effects on the perpetrators. In this most public work of psycho…
Black South African Students' Beliefs and Attitudes about Condoms
To investigate the beliefs and attitudes of black South African students regarding condoms structured questionnaires were completed anonymously by 1986 students. Most highly endorsed problems were the large number needed for many rounds of sex, partner's feelings of distrust, unpleasantness of purchasing condoms, and that condoms injure the vagina. Reliability of a Knowledge of Aids Scale: A Replication
Zimet's knowledge of AIDS scale was completed anonymously by 2,209 university students to assess whether a split-half approach in which items in each half were matched for content would provide better estimates of reliability than other methods. Analysis indicated that the odd-even Spearman-Brown split-half reliability coefficient was lower than both the alpha coefficient and the content-based split-half coefficient. The Cronbach alpha was simila…

The response of South African professional psychology associations to apartheid
Professional psychology associations in South Africa have overtly and covertly furthered the aims of apartheid. Guidance about the ethical obligations of psychologists in the South African context has been singularly lacking, and as a result blacks have not been attracted to the profession of psychology in sufficient numbers to administer to psychological needs of the client population. The political dimension of psychological practice in South A…
