Edna Heidbreder
After completing her undergraduate degree at Knox College in 1911, Edna Heidbreder was a high school teacher of history for several years. She began her graduate work at the University of Wisconsin where she received a master's degree in philosophy in 1918. Mary Whiton Calkins (1863–1930)
Mary Whiton Calkins (1863–1930) was fourteenth President of the American Psychological Association, invented the paired-associate technique, founded an early psychological laboratory, and developed a system of self-psychology. Her eminence as a psychologist and a scholar was widely acknowledged and she was the recipient of two honorary degrees. Calkins published prolifically in both psychology and philosophy, moving away from psychology into phil…

Mary Whiton Calkins (1863-1930) fourteenth president of the American Psychological Association
Relatively little has been published about the life and contributions of Mary Whiton Calkins (1863–1930), fourteenth president of the American Psychological Association. A student of William James, Josiah Royce, and Hugo Münsterberg at Harvard in the 1890s, Calkins completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. but was not granted the degree because she was a woman. Calkins's contributions to psychology include the invention of the paired-associate…
Temporal Control of Activity in White Carneaux and Feral Pigeons
The time course of activity during the interval between food deliveries on fixed-time feeding schedules of 10, 20, 50, and 100 sec. was compared in White Carneaux and feral pigeons. The data were analyzed using a mathematical model of the temporal control of behavior recently proposed by Killeen (1975). This model represents the time course of general activity on fixed-time feeding schedules as the algebraic sum of two exponential functions. The …
Population Density and Alcohol Consumption in the Rat
Rats were assigned to uncrowded, moderately crowded and overcrowded cages. The moderately crowded drank significantly more alcohol solution than the other two groups
Extinction in the Pigeon after Continuous Reinforcement
Number of responses and time to extinction were measured after 3, 10, 1000, 3000, 5000, and 10,000 reinforced key-peck responses during conditioning. Each response was reinforced with a 045-gm. food pellet. The number of responses in extinction was a monotonically increasing function which became asymptotic beyond 1000 reinforced responses. Number of reinforced responses during conditioning significantly affected the number of responses in extinc…
