  • Avertive constructions in Finnish

Open Access•Anton Granvik, Heidi Niva et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•2025

Avertives refer to (mainly past) situations the outcome of which is interrupted, averted, or frustrated instead of completed, as in Meinasin kaatua, mutta ihmeen kaupalla onnistuin pysymään jaloillani ‘I was about to fall, but miraculously managed to stay on my feet’. The aim of this paper is to describe and compare three verbal constructions in Finnish which are frequently used as avertives by means of collostructional analysis (Stefanowitsch & …

  • Lingüística mochica

    Open Access•Rita Eloranta•ARTICLE•Lexis•2019•Cited by: 1

In this article, I examine some previously proposed etymologies of words of Mochica origin. In addition, I discuss certain hispanicisms that would be better understood when seen as stemming from Mochica. To this end, I also discuss diverse grammatical aspects of the extinct Mochica language: nominal possession, numeral classification, spatial relation markers, nominalization and future paradigms. The reflections I offer here are based on Jos Anto…

  • The Marañón-Huallaga exchange route

    Open Access•Luis Miguel Rojas-Berscia, Rita Eloranta•ARTICLE•LIAMES Línguas Indígenas Americanas•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 36

In this article we claim that stone classifier-based numeral systems in a number of unrelated North-western South American language families/languages such as Kawapanan, Cholón-Hibito, Munichi, and, tentatively, Quingnam emerged due to calquing or loan translation (Weinreich 1963; Epps 2006, 2013). In addition, although the donor language remains unknown, we argue for this to be a case of a poorly attested grammaticalisation path of numeral class…

  • Ñaimlap, the Birds, and the Sea

    Open Access•Matthias Urban, Rita Eloranta•ARTICLE•Names•2017•References: 6

Among the most intriguing oral testimonies of the late pre-Hispanic cultures of the Peruvian North Coast are the legends of origin that the Spanish were still able to record. In this article, we explore the names of the (mythological) first rulers and their associates which figure in one particularly famous North-Coast legend, that of Ñaimlap, the mythological founder of Lambayeque. We show that the name of Ñaimlap, as well as those of his courti…
