Syntactic markers and syntactic spelling: The noun phrase in German and French
In this paper, we first summarize the results of studies that have investigated the acquisition, reading, and spelling of noun phrases (NPs) in German and French. Then, we present the assumptions made in those studies. In the main part of the paper, we provide a detailed comparison of German and French noun phrases. There are numerous differences that have never been discussed in this context before; for example, the behavior of articles in Germa…
Influence of capitalisation and presence of an article in noun phrase recognition in German: Evidence from eye‐tracking
Background German is exceptional in its use of noun capitalisation. It has been suggested that sentence‐internal capitalisation as in German may benefit processing by specifically marking a noun and thus a noun phrase (NP). However, other cues, such as a determiner, can also indicate an NP. The influence of capitalisation on processing may thus be context‐dependent, that is, dependent on other cues. Precisely this context dependency is investigat…
Visible verbal morphology: Morpheme constancy in Germanic and Romance verbal inflection
In different spelling systems, different grades of morpheme constancy can be found: German has a high degree of morpheme constancy (especially stem constancy, for example rennen - rennt both forms with ), while English has comparatively less (running - run, only the disyllabic form with ). This paper investigates the interaction between stems and verbal inflectional suffixes in terms of constancy in three Germanic languages (Dutch, English, Germa…

Sichtbare und Hörbare Morphologie
Morphological spellings in English
Morphologically motivated spellings in English are usually thought to be restricted to cases like 〈electric – electrician – electricity〉, where the stem final letter 〈c〉 is kept constant in spelling although the corresponding phoneme varies in spoken language. However, there are many more – and fundamentally different – spellings that refer to morphological information. We will show this by systematically going through the three major parts of mo…

The length hierarchy and the graphematic syllable: Evidence from German and English
Minuscules of the Roman alphabet can be subcategorized into graphemes with length (for example 〈b〉) and graphemes without length (for example 〈o〉). While plosives, which correspond to graphemes with length, occur at the syllable edge, vowels, corresponding to graphemes without length, constitute the syllable core. Based on these observations, a length hierarchy is established in which the feature ‘length’ becomes scalar. This hierarchy operates o…
Das graphematische Wort (im Deutschen): Eine erste Annäherung
In the field of phonology, the concept of ‘word’ has been well-defined in contemporary linguistics. In morphology and syntax, the different existing theories provide a basis for establishing a ‘word’ as well. In graphematics, too, establishing a concept for ‘word’ might appear simple: A graphematic word is the segment sequence between two spaces. But what does this segment-sequence look like? The essay addresses this question in three steps. It b…
Zwischen Wort und Syntagma: Zur grammatischen Fundierung der Getrennt- und Zusammenschreibung
Doubts about whether to write words separately or together in German are frequently grammatical in nature. Here various combinations are discussed (noun-verb combinations, adjective-verb combinations, various combinations with adjectives and participles) to establish whether the examples in question are complex words or syntagmas. In the process, criteria are identified for words and non-words (syntagmas) and drawn upon to propose rules for writi…
Schulorthographie und Graphematik
This paper will address the relationship between ‘school orthography’ and graphemics. For a long time graphemics was not accepted as a linguistic subject at all. However, orthography has always been taught in school. Problems with the discrepancy are discussed in this paper. We will focus on the problems at the level of phoneme-grapheme-correspondences, the basic principle for alphabetical systems. We will then analyse the interpretation of mista…
Restricting Suffix Combinations In German And English: Closing Suffixes And The Monosuffix Constraint
Gegen j…
Deutsche Grammatik in Theorie und Praxis
The topics addressed in this volume dedicated to the linguist and German studies scholar Peter Eisenberg are grouped under four headings. The first section devoted to phonology, syllabification and the word is followed by essays on the grammar of two central parts of speech, the noun and the verb. Section four is given over to the illumination of sentence grammar from very different vantages. All four sections encompass a wide array of perspectiv…
It is controversial in the literature whether the First Participle in German ('Present Participle'; henceforth: Part I) is an adjective or a verbal form. Syntactically, it occurs exclusively in adjectival positions but it does not behave like an adjective in other respects. This paper provides an analysis of Part I starting from a diachronic perspective and arriving at a synchronic interpretation of its position in the field of 'finite verb + non…

A derivational analysis of foreign stems: A change in the process of becoming German and its theoretical interpretation
The following speciality of German is often mentioned: A loanword gets the corresponding German suffix, and is therefore not like in English just princess, American, musical, but Prinzess-in, amerikan-isch, musikal-isch. Sometimes it is also possible for a stem to become German without this special suffix, for example Baroneß, Photograph, brutal, but in English baroness, photographer, brutal. The process of becoming German with the help of native…

Deutsch - Typologisch
