It pays particular attention to ho…

In/Visible Black Pain and Joy: The Embodiment of Colonial Mentality and Black Joy Among Black Women in Finland
This article analyzes how anti-Black racism operates affectively in shaping Black women’s collective intimacies and experiences of colonial mentality. Using affect theory, a Fanonian understanding of colonial mentality, and a reparative reading approach, it centres on the epistemic authority of Black women living in Finland. Through this approach, the article captures the in/visibility of pain and joy of Blackness in their bodyminds. By accentuat…
Racialised Integration: Arabic-Speaking Refugees and Immigrants’ Experiences on the Paradoxes of Integration
Finland’s integration policy is praised for its inclusivity and for guaranteeing equal opportunities. This paper examines how integration processes work within such an ideal image. Building on theoretical and critical discussions of integration and racialisation, we approach integration as a mechanism of racialisation and discuss the consequences of racialised integration practices for Arabic-speaking refugees and immigrants living in Finland. We…
Vulnerabilizing Young People
This essay is about the ethos of vulnerability, young people, and policies and practices related to youth support systems in Finland. Our aim is to scrutinize the alliance of the ethos of vulnerability and neoliberal rationality as well as its outcomes in terms of support systems and young people from various backgrounds. In the end, we take our analysis further to see how this alliance is associated with education and how it works by de-politici…
Constituting Immigrant Care Workers Through Gendering and Racialising Practices in Education
The focus of this paper is to examine how immigrants become constituted as ideal care workers in educational settings. By analysing the everyday practices in two educational contexts in the Helsinki metropolitan area, Finland, the authors explore how these practices that are influenced by the national and transnational immigration and integration policy, regardless of their well-meant actions, can gender and racialise students with immigrant stat…
Education and Training as Projectised and Precarious Politics
This article explores a new kind of political ethos in education: the alliance of projectisation and precarisation and their individual-based implementation. It is a critique of project based activities working with ‘at risk’ groups in Finland, specifically in the preparation of immigrants and those with criminal backgrounds, for a life of precarity. The projects discussed refer to publicly funded, short-term educational programmes that operate o…

This paper explores the educational choice-making of students with special educational needs in the context of Finnish pre-vocational training and one of its programmes, ‘Preparatory and Rehabilitative Instruction and Guidance for Disabled Students’. The authors enquire into the kinds of educational choices available for students in the preparatory programme, and how student counselling meets their educational hopes and future plans. The analysis…
