  • Lannistumaton. Matti Kurikan haaveet ja haaksirikot kolmella mantereella

    Aleksi Huhta•ARTICLE•Journal of Finnish Studies•2023

Out of all Finnish political figures who never held a political office, Matti Kurikka (1863–1915) must be among the most researched. The Ingrian socialist firebrand, who led political movements on three continents at the turn of the twentieth century, has continued to inspire novelists, artists, and historians well into the twenty-first century. Given the volume of academic and popular works on Kurikka, it might seem unlikely that yet another bio…

In the early twentieth century, around forty Finnish families settled in Cuba as part of a larger settler migration from North America and Northern Europe. The Finns mostly settled in two American farming colonies, one near Itabo (Matanzas province), the other in Omaja (Oriente). The prominently working-class Finns usually came to Cuba from the U.S., where they had lived as labourers. In Cuba, they hoped to establish themselves as export-oriented…

Lukija perehdytetään alle kahdessasadassa sivussa transnationaalisuuden, vertailevan imperiumien tutkimuksen ja globaalihistorian merkitykseen Länn…

  • Joutuisi kykenemättömyytensä tähden yhteiskunnan rasitukseksi”

    Open Access•Aleksi Huhta•ARTICLE•Historiallinen Aikakauskirja•2021

Artikkeli osall…

  • Debating Visibility

    Open Access•Aleksi Huhta•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2014

This article examines Finnish-American press debates on 'Finnishness' in the United States in the aftermath of a 1907 miners' strike on the Mesabi Range of northern Minnesota. Finnish workers had an extremely visible presence in the picket lines. The strike helped in dividing Finnish migrants into two hostile groups, conservatives and radicals, which disagreed vehemently on the question of how Finns should be seen by 'Americans', an often vaguely…
