  • Cross-country analysis of negative attitudes towards immigrants and immigration in Southeast Asia: A case of Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand

Open Access•M Valenta, David Andreas Bell et al.•ARTICLE•Asian and Pacific migration journal•2026•References: 36

This article focuses on anti-immigrant attitudes in the three largest receivers of immigrants in Southeast Asia—Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. We found that the two dimensions of attitudes we analyzed—attitudes toward immigrants and immigration—have differing predictive power in the three countries, suggesting that they are rooted in distinct local concerns. Overall, the study found that people’s concerns regarding competition for jobs genera…

  • Scepticism towards Islam or religiosity? An experimental approach to exploring scepticism towards Muslims in Norway

    Open Access•David Andreas Bell, A Fladmoe et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2025•References: 17

Muslims in Europe tend to have an immigrant background. Consequently, they often face a twofold challenge: they are subjected to the prejudice and discrimination immigrants in general face alongside prejudice directed towards them as a religious minority. In this study, we explore the role of Muslims’ religiosity and how it relates to scepticism towards Muslims. We apply an online split-sample survey experiment conducted in 2021 to investigate No…

  • Outside the Western bubble: Explaining anti‐immigrant attitudes in 28 post‐communist countries

    Open Access•David Andreas Bell, M Valenta•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 48

Most studies on anti‐immigrant attitudes have been conducted within the US or in Western European countries. As a result, the theoretical frameworks utilised to comprehend these attitudes are often based on a limited subset of the global population. Hence, it remains uncertain how these theories apply to regions beyond the Western context. Based on the Life in Transition Survey, we explore whether the theories and factors discussed in Western con…

  • Who would never grant them equal rights? A comparative analysis of welfare chauvinism in Central and Eastern Europe

    Open Access•David Andreas Bell, M Valenta•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2024•References: 28

Welfare chauvinism is often understood as the sentiment that the benefits and services of the welfare state should primarily be given to the native population and not immigrant minorities.Using linear regression on data from the 8th wave of the European Social Survey, this study explores how political attitudes and negative attitudes towards different immigrant groups affect welfare chauvinistic attitudes in six countries: the Czech Republic, Hun…

  • Public attitudes towards immigrants: A curious case of Croatia

    Open Access•Zan Strabac, M Valenta et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The Croatian population has been subjected to violent ethnic conflicts during the war in the 1990s and has more recently experienced large‐scale irregular and refugee migrations, as well as a notable increase in regular labour migration. Using data from the most recent wave of the European Social Survey, we have conducted an analysis of Croatian attitudes towards immigrants. Our study found that, despite Croatia's history of ethnic conflict and o…

  • Perceptions and realities: Explaining welfare chauvinism in Europe

Open Access•David Andreas Bell, M Valenta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2023•Cited by: 7•References: 26

Welfare chauvinism is largely understood as the view that the benefits of the welfare state should primarily be given to the native population, and not shared with the immigrant populations. Using a multilevel approach, we analyse welfare chauvinism in Europe and test to see how different contextual and macro-economic conditions may influence welfare chauvinistic attitudes in Europe, with a particular focus on different nuances of unemployment. W…

  • Nordic welfare chauvinism: A comparative study of welfare chauvinism in Sweden, Norway and Finland

    Open Access•David Andreas Bell, M Valenta et al.•ARTICLE•International Social Work•2022•Cited by: 10•References: 18

This study analyses welfare chauvinist attitudes in the generous welfare states of Sweden, Norway and Finland. We find that strict forms of exclusionary welfare chauvinism are near non-existent. However, Finland, Norway and Sweden are in the top tier in Europe when it comes to beliefs that immigrants need to obtain citizenship before being given equal rights to social benefits. This may indicate a future turn in social policy when it comes to inc…

  • A comparative analysis of changes in anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim attitudes in Europe: 1990–2017

    Open Access•David Andreas Bell, M Valenta et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Migration Studies•2021•Cited by: 19•References: 22

Muslims and immigrants have both been subjected to negative attitudes over the past several decades in Europe. Using data from the European Values Study, this study analyses the changes in these attitudes in the period 1990–2017. We find that negative attitudes have been increasing on average in Europe as a whole, with anti-Muslim attitudes being more prevalent than anti-immigrant attitudes. However, when split into a Western European set and an …

  • Exclusion of Muslims in Eastern Europe and Western Europe. A Comparative Analysis of Anti-Muslim Attitudes in France, Norway, Poland and Czech Republic

David Andreas Bell, Zan Strabac•ARTICLE•International Journal on Minority…•2020

There are worrying signs of rising intolerance towards Muslim immigrants in the majority of European societies. We use data from the 2014/2015 wave of European Social Survey to analyse negative attitudes toward Muslim immigrants in France, Norway, Poland and the Czech Republic. Results of the analyses reveal that both levels and determinants of the anti-Muslim attitudes vary greatly. The levels are highest in Czech Republic and Poland, the two co…
