  • Don't quit your day job. Part-time firefighters in rural Norway

Open Access•Petter Grytten Almklov, Gudveig Gjøsund et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2026

Part-time firefighters (PTFs) in rural Norway are employed in minor positions, have little formal training and often few resources. Still, they respond to a wide array of incidents in an impressive manner. Based on interviews of 24 informants in three municipalities our analysis shows how three small rural fire departments organize their work in a situation where most of their crew have 2% positions (sometimes less) as firefighters. We analyze th…

  • From Trivial to Critical. Emergent Interagency Collaboration Through Co‐Location of Emergency Call Centrals

Open Access•Petter Grytten Almklov, Stian Antonsen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contingencies and…•2025•References: 32

This paper studies the role of day‐to‐day social interaction among emergency call central operators and its effect on interagency collaboration in emergencies. In 2017 the police, fire and health emergency call centrals in a region in Norway were co‐located. This was done largely retaining their formal structures and responsibilities, which follows strict sectorial boundaries. However, the proximity afforded by co‐location −placing the centrals i…

  • Introducing Moving Back to the Control Room—Revisiting Centres of Coordination

Open Access•Maria Normark, Petter Grytten Almklov et al.•ARTICLE•Computer Supported Cooperative…•2024

  • The Legacy of Coordinative Practice

Open Access•Marte Fanneløb Giskeødegård, Kristina Kjersem et al.•ARTICLE•Computer Supported Cooperative…•2024

This article explores the balance, and the shift in balance, between technologies and practices that coordinate work. The empirical data stems from a primarily qualitative study of a Norwegian shipyard in a phase of transition, where new models of collaboration emerge due to changes in the company environment. The article highlights the interplay between formal and informal articulation work, as well as the role of coordinative IT artifacts in th…

  • Revurdering Av Maktbegrepet I Teknologiens Tidsalder

Håkon Fyhn, Jens Røyrvik et al.•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2021•Cited by: 1

  • Accountability on the Fly - Accounting for Trouble in Space Operations

Open Access•Petter Grytten Almklov, Kristin Halvorsen et al.•ARTICLE•Computer Supported Cooperative…•2020

The International Space Station (ISS) is research infrastructure enabling experiments in a microgravity environment. Building on a study of one of the ground control rooms in the ISS network, this paper concentrates on low-level operators and their efforts to display accountability in situations of trouble and problem solving. While the research infrastructure around the ISS is permeated by structural (bureaucratic) approaches to accountability (…

  • Making Work Invisible

    Open Access•Petter Grytten Almklov, Stian Antonsen•ARTICLE•Public Administration•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Based on a study of reliability consequences of New Public Management ( NPM ) reforms in Norwegian critical infrastructure sectors, this article suggests that the discourse of work found in NPM renders essential aspects of operational work invisible—including practices that are known to be of importance for reliability. We identify two such organizationally ‘invisible’ characteristics of operational work: the ongoing situational coordination requ…

  • Towards the Gigantic

    Open Access•Jens Røyrvik, Petter Grytten Almklov•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 15

This paper is based on studies of how standardized entities work as elements in a regime to control risk and hazardous work. Drawing on empirical examples from the petroleum industry and infrastructure sectors, we illustrate not only the mechanisms by which particular modes of entification are involved in regimes of control but also their shortcomings and seductive powers as representations. We show how the world is semantically captured and orga…

  • Between and beyond data

    Open Access•Petter Grytten Almklov, Vidar Hepsø•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 12

This paper explores how experience from field trips to geological analogues informs the interpretation of remote data sources in petroleum reservoir geology. It is based on observations of a group of petroleum geologists on a field trip to an analogue field and descriptions of the typical office work of such professionals in the same company. Special attention is given to representational artefacts and data types employed in the different setting…

  • Standardized Data and Singular Situations

    Open Access•Petter Grytten Almklov•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 9

Today a key feature of every technological organization is the abundance and pivotal role of standardized data sets. This paper discusses the interplay between standardized semantic knowledge representations and situated work on a knowledge intensive workplace. Drawing upon anthropological fieldwork with geologists and engineers in the `subsurface' department of an oil company, this paper discusses how an oil reservoir is represented with standar…
