Exploring the sociogenesis of identity by integrating big story and small story narrative research
This paper proposes an integrated epistemological and methodological approach to narrative identity research that leverages the strengths of big story and small story traditions. We outline the study design for researching the dynamics between micro-social identity processes and stabilized identity positions. We suggest sampling dyads and gathering data regarding the unresolved experience in two main phases: individual interviews and interactions…
When Our History Meets Their History
When a multiethnic state, such as the former Yugoslavia, dissolves in a violent ethnic‐based conflict, new generations grow up on one‐sided historical narratives. While there is plenty of evidence of how appropriating such narratives delegitimises outgroups, studies on how young people coordinate diverse group narratives are lacking. To address this issue, we explored promotive strategies young majority group members use in building a more inclus…
Digitalization of Education
This article contributes to discussions about the gap between formal educational politics and reforms, and concrete educational inequalities. With our empirical case, we bring into this discussion the contemporary reforms of formal education that lean on an imaginary idea of digitalization as an equalizing power without recognizing the criticism directed towards it. Within this case, the article covers postdigitalism in education where digitaliza…
Lay historical narratives and ethnic identity
The 1999 NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia is a historical episode of immense importance to Serbia?s society today. However, younger generation does not have any personal account of this event: their historical understandings are based on personal accounts from witnesses, mass media and social institutions such as the system of education. Previous research shows that historical narratives represent one of the most important contents of ethnic identit…
Introducing community-based mental health support in Serbia
Findings suggest that providing continuous services that address the users' need to engage in activities that give them meaning and purpose, provide socialisation and peer support, and promote their autonomy and agency can play a vital role in advancing the process of recovery and well-being of long-term psychiatric users
Experiences of medical transition in transgender people in Serbia
Transgender people are one of the most stigmatized social groups. They are experiencing institutional stigma and stigma on individual psychological level through different medical and legal procedures specific to their group. Though gender confirmation surgeries have been performed in Serbia for more than three decades, research on experiences and ways in which transgender people give meaning to the process is lacking. This topic became even more…
Normalizing” Everyday Life in the State of Emergency
Although emerging adults are generally more physically resilient to the severe effects of COVID-19, they might be vulnerable to the psychological stressors brought about by the crisis. Using semi-structured interviews, this qualitative research aimed to explore the experiences, well-being, coping strategies and future expectations of 15 emerging adults in Serbia during the state of emergency caused by the global pandemic. As a result of thematic …
The role of social support in the experience of abortion
Even though the experience of abortion is a relatively common experience among women in Serbia, personal accounts in relation to abortion are rarely examined. International findings show that having social support is crucial in coping with this experience. The main objective of this research was to examine the ways in which women rely on social support and the ways in which this shapes their experiences. After six semi-structured interviews with …
Woman as a subject of childbirth
Childbirth represents a specific meeting point between nature and culture: it is a biological event in which the main actors are social beings, a natural process which has been given a special cultural status through the process of scientific-technological translation. The complex nature of childbirth also raises twofold challenge to woman in labour. On the one hand, the flow of dramatic bodily changes that is mostly beyond her control represents…
Language, gender, and sexual orientation
This study seeks to determine whether and in which way homosexual people rely on gender-specific style characteristics when communicating in the internet environment. It is assumed that the basis of differences in language practices is not some identity category (either gender or sexual), that uses these practices only as a means of expression. Instead, language is seen as a resource that allows us to respond to a variety of communication situati…
