Philip Roth’s Haunts
> With his own ghostly voice he had exhorted me, on the sacred consideration of my filial duty and reverence towards him—who might reasonably regard himself as my official ancestor—to bring his mouldy and moth-eaten lucubrations before the public. > > Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter
Finding a pedagogy of empathy in a Common Read Project
Inspired by common read projects, wherein first-year students read a shared text as a means of acclimating to the university community, our writing program adopted a project introducing students to bell hooks’ ‘Teaching With Love’ through an empathy-based pedagogy. The researchers, with faculty participants, used a heuristic method of indwelling to reflect on core issues of equity, inclusivity, diversity, and justice as the basis for developing o…
Collaboration and ‘potential space’
Graduate students writing on their own often struggle with knowledge production and identity conflicts. Conversely, writing with others presents its own set of challenges, as collaborators struggle to define roles and expectations. To systematically foster and teach collaborative writing practices for graduate students, we performed a self study of collaborative writing. We utilized Winnicott’s (1991. Playing and Reality. Psychology Press) theory…
Integrated literacy instruction as anti-racist pedagogy in schools of social work
Disproportionate access to literacy skills keeps many students from achieving leadership roles. Using an autoethnographic narrative as evidence, we call for an anti-racist pedagogy in accordance with the social work code of ethics – one that changes how we understand literacy in graduate programmes. We suggest that the implementation of Writing Across the Curriculum via enhanced teacher training in grammar is a necessary outcome of cultural humil…

We call for a re-valuation of Albert as a self-referential master in the tradition of Roth that has so far included all of her male peers while leaving her out—perhaps because of, or despit…
