  • Spontaneous order and civilization

    Open Access•Gregory M Collins•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 33

In light of a growing body of scholarship that has cast doubt on the analytic import of spontaneous order, the purpose of my article is to rethink the intellectual relationship between Edmund Burke and Friedrich Hayek by suggesting that reading spontaneous order into Burke’s thought introduces greater tensions between the two thinkers than prior scholars have suggested. One crucial tension, I suggest, is that Hayek believed that contractual arran…

  • Edmund Burke, Strauss, and the Straussians

    Gregory M Collins•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Political Science•2019

In Natural Right and History, Leo Strauss accused Edmund Burke of being ignorant of the nobility of last-ditch resistance; defending a conception of history that set the path for historicism; and discarding a vision of politics as it ought to be. By separating philosophy from politics, Burke, according to Strauss, helped lay the intellectual foundation for modern political ideologies. While a number of scholars have attempted to vindicate or refu…

  • Edmund Burke on slavery and the slave trade

    Gregory M Collins•ARTICLE•Slavery and Abolition•2019•Cited by: 4

This article reconstructs Edmund Burke’s thoughts on slavery from his Account of the European Settlements in America to his parliamentary speeches in the late 1700s. It seeks to demonstrate that Burke’s program for slave reform, Sketch of a Negro Code, was one of the earliest plans for gradual abolition and gradual manumission formulated in eighteenth-century England and, quite possibly, the first ever in modern British history whose scheme was d…

  • Beyond Politics and Natural Law

    Gregory M Collins•ARTICLE•American Political Thought•2017•References: 5

Scholarship on Frederick Douglass has focused on his natural law and natural rights philosophy and on his statesmanship in breaking with Garrisonian abolitionists over the question of whether slavery is compatible with the US Constitution. My article departs from these readings by addressing the merits of his strict constitutional philosophy. I argue that Douglass’s emphasis on a plain reading of the Constitution’s semantic content and his skepti…

  • Edmund Burke on the Question of Commercial Intercourse in the Eighteenth Century

    Open Access•Gregory M Collins•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Scholars have noticed that Edmund Burke's impassioned economic tract in favor of market liberty, Thoughts and Details on Scarcity , appears to be at odds with his political philosophy and rhetorical temperament of prudence and restraint. This essay challenges this interpretation. I contend that Burke's emotional statements in the writing reflect strong continuities with his earlier reflections and political activities regarding economic issues. F…
