Machiavelli’s Critique of Leonardo Bruni
Recent scholarship has shown the centrality of factionalism and conflict to Machiavelli’s understanding of political life. The present essay builds on this literature by showing that Machiavelli’s view of political speech precludes that it may be a moderating medium for political conflict, as had been hoped by his classical and neoclassical predecessors. Machiavelli brings this theoretical issue into focus in the Florentine Histories through his …
Anger, Hatred, and Judgment in Aristotle's Rhetoric
Aristotle's analysis in the Rhetoric of the intelligibility of passionately angry political speech is an urgently needed addition to the ongoing scholarly reassessment of his relevance to democratic practices. Aristotle shows his readers—both orators and their auditors, citizens who might both rule and be ruled—that anger is prone to exaggeration and distortion and is therefore liable to be amplified into hatred. He shows further though that if i…

Heidegger’s Post-Western Politics
The revival of ideologically motivated right-wing political agitation across the Western world demands that its intellectual sources be discovered. Martin Heidegger has occupied a position among anti-liberal, anti-modernist, and anti-Western forces across the globe comparable to that of Karl Marx on the socialist Left. Yet scholars still lack the conceptual terminology for capturing the political import of his work. The recent publication of Heid…
Machiavelli and the Contestable Surface
Both Zuckert and Strauss take the “surface” of Machiavelli's work as the necessary starting point for their interpretations. Zuckert differs from Strauss, however, with respect to what she takes the surface to be. She focuses more attentively on the literary character of the work, as written or literary, and so is led to a different series of observations and emphases in her interpretation of Machiavelli

Heidegger and Politics
In this fresh interpretation of Heidegger, Alexander Duff explains Heidegger's perplexing and highly varied political influence. Heidegger and Politics argues that Heidegger's political import is forecast by fundamental ambiguities about the status of politics in his thought. Duff explores how in Being and Time as well as earlier and later works, Heidegger analyzes 'everyday' human existence as both irretrievably banal but also supplying our only…

Republicanism and the Problem of Ambition
Ambition enjoys an ambiguous status in political practice. It is at once necessary and dangerous. Although Machiavelli's engagement with Cicero in the Prince has been well-noted, his critique in the Discourses of his preeminent rival authority on republicanism has received very little attention. This critique concerns Cicero's failure to respond to the threat posed to republican institutions by the ambition of leading citizens. By following out t…
