  • Diet

Günter Wagner, Günter P Wagner•CHAPTER•Bantu of North Kavirondo : Volume 2•2018

The proportion of the various kinds of grain in the customary diet shows considerable local variations as well as seasonal changes. In most parts of the District the seasonal changes in consumption are directly dependent upon the agricultural cycle. Apart from dietary changes due to the increased cultivation of maize, the introduction of new varieties of maize, beans and others, and the issue of superior strains of seed, the traditional fare has …

  • Property

Günter Wagner, Günter P Wagner•CHAPTER•Bantu of North Kavirondo : Volume 2•2018

When discussing the Logoli system of property rights, cattle must be separately dealt with, as they form a distinct class of property. The Logoli attitude towards cattle is reflected to some extent in sayings, proverbs, songs and customs as well as in the prominent place which cattle play in litigation. In the social and political context, the traditional attitude towards land was basically determined by the patrilineal clan organization and by t…

  • Development and the evolvability of human limbs

Open Access•Nicholas Maurice Young, Nathan M Young et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2010

The long legs and short arms of humans are distinctive for a primate, the result of selection acting in opposite directions on each limb at different points in our evolutionary history. This mosaic pattern challenges our understanding of the relationship of development and evolvability because limbs are serially homologous and genetic correlations should act as a significant constraint on their independent evolution. Here we test a developmental …

  • Organism and Character Decomposition

    Open Access•Manfred D Laubichler, Günter P Wagner•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2000•Cited by: 1•References: 10

In this paper we argue that an operational organism concept can help to overcome the structural deficiency of mathematical models in biology. In our opinion, the structural deficiency of mathematical models lies mainly in our inability to identify functionally relevant biological characters in biological systems, and not so much in a lack of adequate mathematical representations of biological processes. We argue that the problem of character iden…

  • Perspective

    Open Access•Günter P Wagner, Lee Altenberg•ARTICLE•Evolution•1996

The problem of complex adaptations is studied in two largely disconnected research traditions: evolutionary biology and evolutionary computer science. This paper summarizes the results from both areas and compares their implications. In evolutionary computer science it was found that the Darwinian process of mutation, recombination and selection is not universally effective in improving complex systems like computer programs or chip designs. For …

  • The Study of Culture Contact and the Determination of Policy

    Open Access•Günter Wagner, Günter P Wagner•ARTICLE•Africa•1936•Cited by: 1

Opening ParagraphAlthough the term culture contact implies the existence of several cultures in mutual contact with one another, the African anthropologist is primarily interested in the one-sided effect of European or Asiatic culture upon native African culture. The opposite influence of Africa on Europe and Asia in Africa he can for his purposes discard with a brief survey of those factors that in turn affect the native contact situation, such …
