    Willem Van Vuuren•ARTICLE•Politikon•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This paper critically analyzes the means–ends rationality inherent in three ideologies of racial nationalism. Although such an instrumental rationality may be based on an irrational racist nationalist mythology that exploits the emotive power of mythic narratives and images of race and nation, nationalist ideology also appeals to people's reason and their need to rationalize or legitimize relations of political inequality and domination. Willem Van Vuuren•ARTICLE•Politikon•1995•Cited by: 5

A critical analysis of symbolic politics in South Africa is used in this article to explain an apparent anomaly in White political behaviour, namely, why the government succeeds in maintaining reformist public support despite its failure to achieve its publicly declared reform objectives, particularly in the field of constitutional change. It concludes that the government's ability to manipulate political symbols blunts reformism and makes effect…

  • Domination through reform

    Willem Van Vuuren•ARTICLE•Politikon•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This article offers a framework for the critical analysis of reform as a factor for stabilizing existing relations of domination in South Africa. For this purpose it presents a working definition of domination and focuses on two interacting areas of the government's reform strategy. On the one hand it considers reform as manifested in a formal process of constitutional change, and on the other hand, it views reform as reflected in shifting ideolo…
