  • A process tracing plausibility probe of uneven democratization's effects on cooperative dyads: The case of Zambia and Zimbabwe 1980–1993

    James R Scarritt, Solomon M Nkiwane et al.•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2000•References: 26

In this article we conduct a plausibility probe of the hypothesis that uneven democratization decreases cooperation within primarily cooperative dyads. This hypothesis is derived from a combination of Remmer's theory of democratization and international cooperation with democratic peace theory. The case of cooperation and conflict between two small powers, Zambia and Zimbabwe, from the latter's independence in 1980 to 1993 fits Eckstein's criteri…

  • Bringing nonviolence back into the study of contentious politics

    Henrik Sommer•ARTICLE•Politikon•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 23

This article criticizes synthetic political opportunity structure theory (SPOT) formulated by McAdam, Tarrow and Tilly for insufficiently incorporating a research tradition called the technique approach to nonviolent action (TAN). My purpose is to bring nonviolence back into the study of contentious politics in two steps. First, by sketching the perspectives and comparing them to reveal undiscovered overlaps and differences in inquiry at the micr…

  • The utility of reuters for events analysis in area studies: The case of Zambia‐Zimbabwe interactions, 1982–1993

    Henrik Sommer, James R Scarritt•ARTICLE•International Interactions•1999•Cited by: 8•References: 9

Principal investigators in the Global Events Data System project (GEDS) and others have argued that Reuters Library Report is a superior global source of events data because its coverage of the world's regions is relatively even and it is easily accessible on‐line for automated or semi‐automated coding. The question if Reuters should be coded in conjunction with regional and local sources is left open. We test three expectations: Reuters yields a…

  • Swords into plowshares: Some propositions on the prospects of peace dividend

Open Access•Steve Chan, Henrik Sommer•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Budgeting…•1996

This essay offers a number of propositions about the size, pace, and distribution of defense cutbacks and about the conversion of military resources to civilian purposes. We argue that the prospects for a peace dividend in the aftermath of the cold war are clouded by substantial political incentives and economic interests that may oppose or retard military retrenchment. We also contend that the resource savings from any military retrenchment may …
