  • Micro-macro distinction and the relevance of common social knowledge

Dian Joubert•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Sociology•1994

The micro-macro distinction has become a theme of debate on social theory as a whole, if not one about sociology itself. In an attempt to bring some measure of proportion to the discussion, a few contexts in which the distinction is articulated are examined. Specific attention is given to the relevance of common social knowledge. Contexts examined with this focus in mind include demarcations of the field of sociology, modes of social knowledge in…

  • Domains and methodological contexts of value studies

Dian Joubert•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Sociology•1992

This paper examines a number of domains and methodological contexts within which social values are investigated. The epistemic and methodological characteristics of these two types of areas of investigation—the former differentiated historically, and the latter chosen deliberately—are analysed. The analysis is done within an explicit conception of methodology—and of social values. The methodological contexts distinguished are: populations, situat…

  • Dimensions of social investigation

Dian Joubert•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Sociology•1992

The paper proposes and argues the distinction of dimensions of social investigation. Differentiated and explicated are ontic, epistemic, methodic and social dimensions. The explanation of the dimensions can be said to be ‘contrapuntal’ rather than in direct contradiction to post-modernist denigration of schematisation and systematisation of the field and structure of scientific social investigation. A number of new interpretations are incorporate…

The South African Dictionary of SociologylSosiologiewoordeboek (1983) is a bilingual dictionary comprising 7000 English and 8000 Afrikaans words. An evaluation of its design, content and usefulness takes cognizance of the ‘language situation’ of South African sociology, requirements of technical conceptualization and the practical needs of potential users. The limited functionality of a non-…

  • Tussen politiek en letterkunde

    Dian Joubert•ARTICLE•Politikon•1983

André Brink's collection of “political writings” details his interpretation of —and dissent from — South Africa's racist politics. It also contains some penetrating sorties into the thicket of politically involved literature. This article comments from a sociological point of view on Brinks incisive — and not so incisive — insights into the role of the writer, conflicting interests across the borders of politics and literature and Brink's notion …

  • Maar Nie Met Iemand van 'n Ander Kleur Nie — Regverdigings vir Wette Teen Intieme Verhoudings Oor Die Kleurgrens

Dian Joubert•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Sociology•1974

BUT NOT WITH SOMEONE OF A DIFFERENT COLOUR: VIEWS AND LEGISLATION ON INTERRACIAL SEXUAL RELATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA: This essay is the unaltered “sociological postscript” of a slim volume: Met lemand van 'n Ander Kleur: Beskouings en Wetgewing oor Ontug, in which documentary material is presented on attitudes, parliamentary debates and legislation culminating in the present total ban on sexual intimacies and marriages between whites and non-whites …
