Investigating the firing temperature of Late Chalcolithic ceramics from archaeological sites of the Adhaim-Sirwan Basin, Iraqi Kurdistan using FTIR
Reframing the Uruk Expansion: Glocalization and Local Dynamics in the Late Chalcolithic Adhaim-Sirwan Drainage Basin, Iraqi Kurdistan
Within this paper, glocalization is presented to explain the heterogeneity of the Uruk Expansion/Phenomenon, a process which saw extensive interactions and cultural integration across Mesopotamia during the fourth millennium bce, characterized by the spread of southern Mesopotamian material culture and cultural practices. Through close examination of archaeological data from the Adhaim-Sirwan Drainage Basin, southern Iraqi Kurdistan, a region whi…
There and back again: Local institutions, an Uruk expansion and the rejection of centralisation in the Sirwan/Upper Diyala region
During the fourth millennium BC, public institutions developed at several large settlements across greater Mesopotamia. These are widely acknowledged as the first cities and states, yet surprisingly little is known about their emergence, functioning and demise. Here, the authors present new evidence of public institutions at the site of Shakhi Kora in the lower Sirwan/upper Diyala river valley of north-east Iraq. A sequence of four Late Chalcolit…
Establishing an Absolute Chronological Framework for the Late Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age in Iraqi Kurdistan: Radiocarbon Dates From Kani Shaie
The possibility to conduct new fieldwork projects in previously largely unexplored Iraqi Kurdistan during the past decade has reinvigorated research into the transformative fifth to third millennium BCE (Chalcolithic to Early Bronze Age) in southwest Asia when human societies grew from small, autonomous villages to centralized states with urban centers. Major efforts to synchronize stratigraphic sequences from various sites in order to reach a co…

Late Chalcolithic Ceramic Development in Southern Iraqi Kurdistan: The Stratigraphic Sounding at Kani Shaie
Kani Shaie is a small archaeological site in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, centrally located in the Bazian Basin, a narrow valley at the western edge of the Zagros Mountains along the major route between Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah. Its main mound was inhabited almost continuously from the fifth to the middle of the third millennium, c. 5000–2500 B.C.E. This period of Mesopotamian prehistory, corresponding to the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, wi…
The Later Prehistory of the Shahrizor Plain, Kurdistan Region of Iraq: Further Investigations at Gurga Chiya and Tepe Marani
The Shahrizor Prehistory Project has targeted prehistoric levels of the Late Ubaid and Late Chalcolithic 4 (LC4; Late Middle Uruk) periods at Gurga Chiya (Shahrizor, Kurdistan region of northern Iraq), along with the Halaf period at the adjacent site of Tepe Marani. Excavations at the latter have produced new dietary and environmental data for the sixth millennium B.C. in the region, while at Gurga Chiya part of a burned Late Ubaid tripartite hou…

Older people and outdoor environments: Pedestrian anxieties and barriers in the use of familiar and unfamiliar spaces
Death and a Maiden: Infanticide and the Tragical History of Grethe Schmidt
In Death and a Maiden, Myers presents a close study of one case of infanticide in seventeenth-century Brunswick. In many ways, the story of Grethe Schmidt was not at all unusual: a young woman moves from a small village to the big city to work as a serving maid and finds herself facing charges of infanticide. However, there was also much that was very strange about this case: no one could say for sure if Grethe had ever even been pregnant and the…

Cross-Cultural Studies of Mother-Infant Interaction. Description and Consequence
Mother-Infant Interaction and Infant Development among the Wolof of Senegal
Caretaker-infant interaction within the first year of life was studied in a group of 10 Wolof infants. Using observational techniques as well as standard testing procedures, several results emerge. The pattern of caretaker-infant interaction was more strongly related to age of infant than any other variable investigated. The often-found result that African infants show precocious development within the first year was confirmed for the Wolof. No re…
The Fetal and Maternal Cardiac Response to Environmental Stress
Increasing car seat use for toddlers from inner-city families
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this project was to increase toddler car seat use in low-income minority families. METHODS: Families from Newark, NJ, were divided into two study groups. Both groups were given car seats; one group also received education regarding car restraint use. Observations were made of car seat use before car seat distribution, immediately after distribution, 4 to 5 months later, and 1 year later. RESULTS: Car seat use increased …
Coleridge: The Early Family Letters: The Early Family Letters
This volume of letters - the vast majority of which are previously unpublished - presents a remarkable, often moving, and extraordinary image of the Coleridge family during Samuel Taylor Coleridge's youth, particularly between 1772 and 1793, when the writer reached twenty-one. Revealing the strength of a family suffering repeated losses, James Engell places the Coleridge family letters in a larger biographical context, and offers a new, frank, ye…
