Caring With/In Place
Drawing on relational perspectives of care and understandings of place as an assemblage, we discuss how engagements in local initiatives can be understood as practices of care. We focus on two local initiatives in Gothenburg, Sweden—an allotment garden and a neighbourhood house. The empirical material used here forms part of a study focusing on environmental and material legacy‐making, where 35 persons living in and around Gothenburg were intervi…
Environmental relationalities
In this article, we explore the ways in which urban dwellers understand and relate to ‘the environment’. Conceptualisations of ‘the environment’ deserve attention due to its elusive character, and due to the unbalanced relationship between humans and non-humans where understandings of ‘the environment’ shape human actions in relation to the non-human. The study takes a Constructivist Grounded Theory approach and is based on 35 semi-structured int…
The Legacy Maker Scenario
Interrelated social and environmental challenges call for ideation and responses that integrate the environmental and the social. Arising from the global megatrends of wealth inequality and environmental degradation, two scenarios are outlined. The original scenario pertains to ‘the world as it is’ with increasing concentration of wealth and aggravation of environmental crises. In response to the destructive aspects of the original scenario, an a…
Are economics students biased against female teachers? Evidence from a randomized, double-blind natural field experiment
Student evaluations of teaching tend to be biased against female teachers. Such biases has previously been shown to thrive in anonymous, online settings, such as internet forums. We designed a randomized, double-blind experiment in a natural educational setting to study gender biases in teaching evaluations. In the early post-Covid period, we randomly assigned a male or female name to the instructions given by the online teachers. Importantly, th…
Foregrounding the background
In this methodological reflection, I illustrate how participant-generated photos take on different roles throughout the research process. The photos discussed form part of a study focusing on 'sustainable' everyday practices. I account for how the photos act as windows into meanings of sustainability, as windows into sustainable materialities and as artefacts influencing the research process. The aim is to share insights gained as a result of gra…
Tracing sustainability meanings in Rosendal
Sustainability is a much debated concept, often criticised as ill-defined. While some argue it is time to leave sustainability behind, others defend the concept's potential to initiate change. In this article we depart from the potential of sustainability, while being aware that the term is often appropriated by discourses reproducing status quo and keeping existing injustices in place. We do so by studying the urban sustainability discourse repr…
(Un)sustainable everyday practices sociomateriality shaping sustainability in an urban district
Urban areas are often seen as central sites for sustainability transformations, and in many parts of the world, cities are striving to be recognised for their sustainability initiatives. An example of a new urban district with a sustainability profile is Rosendal, in Uppsala, Sweden. Based on semi-structured interviews supported by participant-generated photographs, I let the everyday practices residents of this district associate with sustainabi…
