A behavioural science framework for tackling upstream challenges in health systems
Insights from behavioural science can inform a wide range of solutions including policy reforms, infrastructure changes, process reengineering, communications, devices and others. Its application in global health has, however, often focused on narrowly defined issues with linear theories of change that are relatively straightforward to study. Using behavioural science to examine ‘upstream’ actors in complex health systems holds promise as a compl…
Behavioural drivers of child feeding during and after illness in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Objective: For young children experiencing an illness, adequate nutrition is critical for recovery and to prevent malnutrition, yet many children do not receive the recommended quantities of food during illness and recuperation. Our research applied a behavioural science lens to identify drivers of feeding behaviours, including barriers inhibiting caregivers from following the feeding guidelines. Design: In 2021, we conducted qualitative research…
Mapping barriers to food, energy, and water systems equity in the United States
Barriers to affordable, accessible, high-quality food, energy, and water systems (FEWS) harm social equity. Connections within and across FEWS suggest that co-occurring barriers to equity can compound vulnerability. We hypothesized that barriers to FEW resources are strongly associated with geographic location, both within and across FEWS, as they rely heavily on localized sociopolitical and natural environments. This study explored the geographi…
Excess Death Rates by State During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Objectives. To estimate state-level excess death rates during 2020 to 2023 and examine differences by region and partisan orientation. Methods. We modeled death and population counts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to estimate excess death rates for the United States, 9 census divisions, and 50 states. We compared excess death rates for states with different partisan orientations, measured by the party of the seated governor a…
Effects of Covid-19 Financial and Social Hardships on Infants’ and Toddlers’ Development in the Echo Program
Negative developmental changes from pre- to during-pandemic were found in boys, yet we did not find any associations between increased experience of pandemic-related hardships and children's development. E how pandemic hardships affect development using a larger sample size and with longer follow-up is warranted
Maternal mood, body image, and eating habits predict changes in feeding practices during the Covid-19 pandemic
Can everyone hear me? Reflections on the use of global online workshops for promoting inclusive knowledge generation
Online research methods have risen in popularity over recent decades, particularly in the wake of COVID-19. We conducted five online workshops capturing the experiences of participatory health researchers in relation to power, as part of a collaborative project to develop global knowledge systems on power in participatory health research. These workshops included predominantly academic researchers working in 24 countries across Africa, Asia, Euro…
Partner influences, breastfeeding, and body image and eating concerns
‘You want to deal with power while riding on power’
INTRODUCTION: Power relations permeate research partnerships and compromise the ability of participatory research approaches to bring about transformational and sustainable change. This study aimed to explore how participatory health researchers engaged in co-production research perceive and experience 'power', and how it is discussed and addressed within the context of research partnerships. METHODS: Five online workshops were carried out with p…
Behavioural barriers and perceived trade-offs to care-seeking for tuberculosis in the Philippines
Effective tuberculosis (TB) treatment has existed for more than 50 years, but TB remains a leading cause of death worldwide and in the Philippines, in part because symptomatic individuals delay or avoid seeking care. Through qualitative interviews in Pampanga, Philippines, we investigated barriers to care-seeking using a behavioural science lens. We found barriers to TB care-seeking to be shaped by: (1) ambiguous symptoms; (2) association of TB r…
A biopsychosocial model of body image, disordered eating, and breastfeeding among postpartum women
The Case for Considering Education and Health
Awareness of the impact of education on health remains relatively low among the public, professionals, and policy makers. Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center on Society and Health sought to raise awareness among key decision makers about the impact of education on health outcomes through its Education and Health Initiative (EHI). EHI utilized four key strategies to raise awareness: user-oriented research, strategic communication, local and …
