  • A Practical Psychoanalytic Guide to Reflexive Research

    Joshua Holmes•BOOK•A Practical Psychoanalytic Guide…•2018

  • Reverie‐informed research interviewing

    Open Access•Joshua Holmes•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 41

Drawing on Thomas Ogden's notion of 'reverie', the role of self-reflection in research interviewing is explored. Ogden views reverie as a co-created intersubjective phenomenon, a 'third', distinct from both analyst and patient. Two face-to-face research interviews with adolescent depression sufferers are described, showing how reverie can be used to help overcome impasse, and develop research hypotheses. Participant-centred research interviews we…

  • Framework analysis: A worked example of a study exploring young people’s experiences of depression

Sally Parkinson, Virginia Eatough et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Psychology•2015•Cited by: 20•References: 8

Framework analysis is an approach to qualitative research that is increasingly used across multiple disciplines, including psychology, social policy, and nursing research. The stages of framework analysis have been described in published work, but the literature is lacking in articles describing how to conduct it in practice, particularly in the field of psychology, where researchers may be working as part of a team. Having used framework analysi…

  • Countertransference Before Heimann: An Historical Exploration

    Open Access•Joshua Holmes•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 24

Received wisdom on the history of countertransference rests on two assumptions: Freud said little about countertransference, and what he did say focused on its role as an impediment to analytic work; the emergence in the 1950s of a conception of countertransference as a crucial beneficial component of psychoanalysis was revolutionary and innovative. Both assumptions are questionable. Detailed examination of Freud’s public and private discussions …

  • Countertransference in qualitative research: A Critical Appraisal

    Open Access•Joshua Holmes•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2014•Cited by: 6•References: 31

The adoption of countertransference, an idea drawn from psychoanalytic theory, by qualitative researchers is examined. It is argued that its definition in the qualitative research literature has often been muddled due to the too-simple mapping of a clinical concept into the research setting. Most definitions either examine countertransference in terms of feeling states or behaviours that participants 'put into' or 'project' into researchers, or m…

  • Using Psychoanalysis in Qualitative Research: Countertransference-Informed Researcher Reflexivity and Defence Mechanisms in Two Interviews about Migration

    Joshua Holmes•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Psychology•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Based on psychoanalytically informed research methodology, an unstructured interview technique was developed in which participants told their stories and freely associated. The content of the study was the experience of migration for two participants who had emigrated to a South American capital city. Data analysis involved two linked processes: a) immersion in, and thematic sorting of, recordings and transcripts and b) analysis of countertransfe…

  • A comparison of clinical psychoanalysis and research interviews

    Open Access•Joshua Holmes•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 33

The increasing interest in psychosocial methods justifies a comparison of elements of clinical psychoanalysis and research interviews. The article outlines the pressures for a paradigm shift in psychoanalysis and research which has led to an overlap between disciplines. While psychoanalysis is under pressure to justify itself with an evidence base, this runs against its constructivist positioning. In contrast, some researchers are becoming dissat…

  • Space and the secure base in agoraphobia: A qualitative survey

    Open Access•Joshua Holmes•ARTICLE•Area•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 23

An important aspect of agoraphobia is a fear of being in crowded public spaces. This inherent spatiality means that it has aroused geographical interest. Feminist geographers have argued that the underlying dynamic of agoraphobia is the patriarchal structuring of public space. Using Attachment Theory, which draws on ideas from psychoanalysis and ethology, agoraphobia is conceptualised as a response to perceived threat in the absence of a ‘secure …
