  • The Impact of a University Sexual Assault Prevention Program on Student Comfort With Help-Seeking

    Open Access•Melissa L Kilmer, Jane E Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•Referências: 1

To reduce sexual victimization on college campuses, many institutions offer mandatory sexual assault prevention programs for students. However, little is known on how such programs may affect willingness to access campus resources. This study attempts to fill this gap with a sample of college students at a mid-sized university in an urban setting ( n = 2,100). Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, we found that students who received the program …

  • How Do We Get There From Here? Toward an Anti-Carceral Future in the Movement to End Gender-Based Violence

    Open Access•Jane E Palmer•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

In this conceptual paper, I argue that the anti-gender-based violence sector must make anti-carceral responses mainstream if we are truly committed to the healing, safety, and well-being of survivors. I trace the history of anti-violence social movements and articulate the harms of carceral responses, while also reflecting on my personal journey as a survivor, practitioner, and researcher. I offer a framework to combat carceral logics by encourag…

  • Civil Legal Services and Survivor-Defined Justice

    Open Access•Jane E Palmer, Jeong-Gyeong Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2024•Citada por: 1•Referências: 1

In the United States and elsewhere, civil legal services are an overlooked strategy in the response to sexual assault. Contrary to the criminal legal system, civil legal remedies can offer supports that are specific to survivors’ immediate needs in the aftermath of sexual assault. To learn more about this legal strategy, we explored three areas: 1) civil legal needs of survivors; 2) barriers to seeking civil legal services; and 3) what survivor-d…

Open Access•Jane E Palmer, Valli Rajah et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2022

In this introduction to the special issue on Anti-Racism and Intersectionality in Feminist Criminology and Academia, we describe the Virtual Forum of the same name that inspired the special issue. The June 4, 2021 Forum was organized by an ad hoc committee of the American Society of Criminology's Division on Women & Crime's Diversity & Inclusion Committee and featured over 100 presenters. We also outline the contributions to the special issue, wh…

  • The Personal is Political and so is Discomfort

Open Access•Valli Rajah, Jane E Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2022

The phrase “the personal is political” is commonly associated with 1970s feminists, for whom it denoted the relationship between personal experiences and broad systems of inequality. However, considering bell hooks’ argument that feminists have lost the power analysis fundamental to the relationship between the personal and the political, we assess the relevance of the notion the ‘personal is political,’ to our work as feminist criminologists. Bu…

  • Anti-racism in Criminology

Open Access•Jane E Palmer, Valli Rajah et al.•ARTICLE•Race and Justice•2022

Since the uprisings of 2020 in the aftermath of the police-perpetrated the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, universities – and some departments – have expressed their commitments to anti-racism in public statements. While statements are laudable, what matters most is how anti-racism is actualized in our classrooms, our syllabi, our departmental policies and practices, our research, and the discipline of criminology. In this paper, we o…

  • The Benefits and Challenges of a Regional Network to Address Campus Sexual Assault

    Open Access•Patrick McGann, Jane E Palmer et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2020

To respond to the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses, many postsecondary institutions have instituted campus climate surveys, strengthened sexual assault misconduct policies, and created sexual assault task forces to coordinate entities within the institutional setting. However, few colleges and universities have engaged with regional networks to exchange resources, research, and innovative practices across campuses. This exploratory …

  • Correlates of Incoming Male College Students’ Proclivity to Perpetrate Sexual Assault

    Open Access•Jane E Palmer, Sarah Mcmahon et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2020•Citada por: 6•Referências: 8

This study examined incoming male college students' proclivity to perpetrate sexual assault at a large public university in the Northeast ( n = 1,619). Overall, self-reported proclivity to perpetrate was low (between 20-26%). Students' perception that a peer would intervene as a bystander was negatively associated with proclivity, while acceptance of certain rape myths was positively associated with proclivity. Students who intended to join a fra…

  • Does Type of Child Risk Affect Whether Mothers Seek Assistance for Intimate Partner Violence From Civil or Criminal Court

    Open Access•Jane E Palmer, Lynette M Renner et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 13

We examined whether risks to children of intimate partner violence survivors affected the type of legal assistance accessed. We hypothesized that the level and type of perceived child risk would be associated with whether women sought a protection order in civil court or filed charges against a current or former intimate partner in criminal court. Using data from a sample of predominantly African American women (N=293), we found that some forms o…

  • Predicting Bystander Behavior to Prevent Sexual Assault on College Campuses

    Open Access•Sarah Mcmahon, N Andrew Peterson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2015•Citada por: 7•Referências: 33

Bystander intervention has been increasingly applied to prevent sexual violence on college campuses. Its underlying theory assumes unidirectional relationships between variables, predicting that bystander behaviors (i.e., actions taken to intervene in sexual violence situations) will be influenced by bystander intentions (BI; i.e., likelihood to intervene in the future), which in turn will be affected by bystander efficacy (BE; i.e., confidence t…
