Regional banks and industrial employment – findings from a comparison of European countries
In light of geopolitical conflicts, the production of physical goods is seen as necessary to ensure resilient economies. However, understanding the factors supporting manufacturing remains limited. The three-sector model falls short in explaining large industrial sectors in high-income countries. Germany is a high-income country with significant secondary sector employment and features a geographically decentralized banking system. A coincidence?…
Configurations of Industrial Symbiosis
This paper examines Industrial Symbiosis (IS), the exchange of by-products and pre-consumer waste within industrial networks. Drawing on an established dataset of 46 international cases, we employ a fuzzy set ideal type analysis to identify four IS configurations: Local Related Multilateral Exchanges, Regional Unrelated Bilateral Exchanges, Regional Unrelated Multilateral Exchanges, and Local Unrelated Multilateral Exchanges. We then illustrate t…
Integrating Manufacturing
This article examines the integration of urban manufacturing into German urban land‐use planning, with a focus on mixed‐use strategies, legal approaches, and the role of court decisions in resolving conflicts related to noise. Building on the findings of a German working group of inter‐ and transdisciplinary experts on urban manufacturing, we explore planning strategies within the current legal framework to secure and promote urban manufacturing.…
Planning for Locally Embedded Economies in the Productive City
Various economic activities (urban agriculture, industries, services) are conceivable in the productive city. This thematic issue attempts to highlight especially urban production/manufacturing as tangible manifestations embedded in their local settings because they are conflict‐ridden, emanate distinctive spatial characteristics, and require complex planning processes. Therefore, we called for empirical case studies of such locally embedded econ…
The Son of Man’s Judgment of Nations. A Framework for Diaconal Spirituality
This article examines Matthew 25:31-45 as a theological framework for diaconal spirituality. It argues that this pericope conveys both an ethical imperative and the promise of Christ’s presence. Moving beyond an imitation of Christ (imitatio Christi), it highlights the encounter with Christ (visitatio Christi) in vulnerable people. The article considers reciprocity in care, challenges the caregiver-care recipient dichotomy, and underscores the eq…
Communicating in chaplaincy
Reflecting on the pastor's professionalism is one of the tasks of practical theology. The goal of this article is to contribute to good practice in Christian chaplaincy. We investigate how to communicate as a chaplain and, to this end, we discuss the functions of asking questions as exemplary of professional chaplaincy interventions.Methodologically, the article has a theoretical as well as an empirical scope. For the former, we develop fundamentals…
Religion und Resonanz
This article examines the religious functions of the Dutch performance practice of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. It introduces the phenomenon itself, points out its religious and ritual significance in the post secular Netherlands, and interprets the passion play with Hartmut Rosa’s social theory. A conclusion about resonance as the common third between religious and aesthetic experiences rounds off the study

The Covid‐19 Pandemic and Relationship Banking in Germany
By providing liquidity Hausbanks can support business clients to overcome the social shutdown and hence cushion the economic impacts of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Germany's regional banks demonstrated such ability in the financial crisis of 2008/09 when, in contrast to large banks, they extended lending. Revisiting research on the global financial crisis and relationship banking, this note presents hints on the soundness and lending ability of retail…
The Passion of Christ on Television
The Passion is a contemporary performance of the passion of Christ live on stage, combined with pop music, city marketing, social media, and entertainment. The result is an encounter between the Christian gospel and traditional elements of devotion like a procession of the cross on the one hand, and the typical mediatization and commercialization of late modern society on the other. In this article, I will first briefly describe the phenomenon, i…
Raum und Unternehmen
The involvement of companies and people in the provision of services of general interest in structurally weak, demographically shrinking regions is becoming increasingly important. In addition to examining the social responsibility of companies under the term ‘corporate social responsibility’, this study also focuses on regional corporate engagement. Against the background of the known dilemmas in the area of civil societal engagement, in which f…
Borders and migration in practical theology. The example of post-World War II German refugees and the inter-generational transfer of their experiences
In present-day Europe, people are crossing borders in need of refuge. This is just one example of the changing spaces for religion, church, and pastoral care in late modernity. However, there has been migration within Europe in recent history. This article exemplifies the practical-theological issue of borders and migration through a historical case study: post-World War II migrants in Germany. The case study shows the long-term effects of migrat…
Corporate Identity
This entry applies the concept of corporate identity to geography, where, due to competition and standardization in globalizing markets, authenticity and also quality of life have become increasingly important. Even if a corporation does not have one identity or one image, these are manageable, but cities and regions have many internal and external identities and perceptions, especially if different spatial layers are taken into consideration. Th…
