Does the left still own social policies? The effect of incumbent partisanship on citizens’ perceptions of public spending in Spain
To what extent do people still regard welfare policies as a policy issue owned by left-wing parties? To answer this question, this article studies the extent to which people use government partisanship (right/left) as a shortcut to infer how much public money is allocated to different policy domains and, subsequently, to develop a stance concerning the adequacy of public budgets. We use Spain as a case study, and we build a large database merging…
The Best Welfare Deal: Retirement Migrants as Welfare Maximizers
Retirement migration within Europe has increased enormously since the 1990s. It now involves millions of elderly Europeans moving from Central/Northern Europe (UK, Germany, Scandinavia) to Mediterranean countries (Malta, Portugal, Spain) in search of a better quality of life. Most previous research departs from an ethnographic perspective to look at the personal experiences and motivations of retirement migrants. In this paper, we adopt a macro-l…

The data stems from qualitative interviews with 19 social workers in ten communities characterised by a sizable population of retirement migrants. We found that substantial numbers of retirement migrants remain in Spain well after dependency sets …
Conceptualizing and Explaining Bureauphobia: Contours, Scope, and Determinants
Several studies have described a perspective among citizens that entails a negative image of public administration or civil servants that persists even after positive encounters and experiences. However, this ambivalent attitude has rarely been studied empirically. The authors refer to this attitude as “bureauphobia” and seek to enhance the existing literature through an analysis of its scope and root causes in Spain. The article analyzes two sur…
Multiplex Migration and Aspects of Precarization: Swedish Retirement Migrants to Spain and their Service Providers

A mélange of migratory processes are scrutinized along a Swedish-Spanish North-South axis. It analyzes longstanding conditions on the Spanish labor m…
It is not Only About Equality. A Study on the (Other) Values That Ground Attitudes to the Welfare State
Literature on welfare attitudes has reached a stylized scheme in which egalitarian values and self-interest concerns are the two main determinants of welfare attitudes. We aim to bring forward existing research by identifying additional values that people draw on to elaborate opinions on welfare issues. Using data from the European Social Survey 2008 and 26 countries, we find that values such as multiculturalism or authoritarianism, among others,…

Perceived efficacy and citizens' attitudes toward welfare state reform
Perceived efficacy of welfare services has never been studied among the variables that determine attitudes toward welfare state reform. Are citizens more prone to accept social expenditure cuts, tax cuts or privatization reforms in welfare programmes when they perceive those programmes as ineffective? With the aim of answering this question, the Spanish case is explored using a 2005 survey carried out by the Spanish Centre for Sociological Resear…
