Testing a continuous measure of recreation specialization among birdwatchers
Recreation specialization is a framework that can be used to explain the variation among outdoor recreationists’ preferences, attitudes, and behaviors. Recreation specialization has been operationalized using several approaches, including summative indices, cluster analysis, and self-classification categorical measures. Although these approaches measure the multiple dimensions of the framework, they may not reflect the relative contribution of th…
Rural-urban differences in hunting and birdwatching attitudes and participation intent
Outdoor recreation facilitates important connections to nature and wildlife, but it is perceived differently across population segments. As such, we expected that socio-demographic characteristics of individuals would influence intention to participate in outdoor recreation. We solicited 5,000 U.S. residents (n = 1,030, 23% response rate) to describe their perceptions of hunting and birdwatching. The influence of current and childhood community s…
Farmers, the Practice of Farming and the Future of Agroforestry
Agroforestry, the practice of raising crops and trees together in ways that are mutually beneficial, provides farmers with an alternative to more conventional farming practices. In this paper, we apply Bourdieu's concepts of 'field' and 'habitus' in an attempt to better understand the practice of farming and the role that agroforestry may have in farming systems. Analysis is based on qualitative and quantitative interviews of farmers and other ke…
The Social Networks of Leaders in More or Less Viable Communities Six Years Later
Using 1995 data, this study re-examines the social networks of leaders in five more and less viable rural communities in Missouri which were originally studied in 1989 (O'Brien et al. 1991; O'Brien and Hassinger 1992). In the six year period between the 1989 and 1995 surveys, four of the five communities were impacted by major events, including the introduction of corporate hog production in two places and flooding in two others. However, despite…

Landowner resistance to lease hunting
Lease hunting programs provide a strategy to address wildlife management on private land in a manner that provides economic compensation to landowners. This paper proposes a sociocultural framework for understanding low rates of participation in lease hunting programs by landowners. We suggest that the predominant emphasis on private property boundaries and the utilization of economic incentives inherent in lease hunting to promote wildlife manag…
