  • Geography of poly-substance drug mortality

Open Access•Andy Hochstetler, Daniel Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Criminal Justice•2023

There has been a rise in drug overdoses and death in recent years. We examine the spatial distribution of drug related deaths in the U.S., by typing places by multiple problem substances and predicting the types with potential covariates. Units of analysis are N = 3079 counties in the 48 conterminous United States. Drug death rates by substance are drawn from confidential cause-of-death mortality files from the National Vital Statistics System an…

  • Using Census Data to Understand County-Level Differences in Overall Drug Mortality and Opioid-Related Mortality by Opioid Type

    M Monnat, Shannon M Monnat et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 27

Objectives. To examine associations of county-level demographic, socioeconomic, and labor market characteristics on overall drug mortality rates and specific classes of opioid mortality. Methods. We used National Vital Statistics System mortality data (2002–2004 and 2014–2016) and county-level US Census data. We examined associations between several census variables and drug deaths for 2014 to 2016. We then identified specific classes of counties…

  • Community Resiliency in Declining Small Towns: Impact of Population Loss on Quality of Life over 20 Years

    Open Access•Daniel Peters, David J Peters•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2019•Cited by: 21•References: 71

This analysis seeks to understand why some small towns have improved quality of life (QoL) over the past 20 years despite sizable population losses. Using a longitudinal data set of small towns in Iowa collected every 10 years since 1994, I measure the resiliency or vulnerability of declining towns based on change in subjective QoL, and then model the socioeconomic correlates along a resilient-decline index. Community resiliency is enhanced by th…

  • American income inequality across economic and geographic space, 1970-2010

  • Income Inequality across Micro and Meso Geographic Scales in the Midwestern United States, 1979-20091

    Open Access•Daniel Peters, David J Peters•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2012•Cited by: 17•References: 31

This article examines the spatial distribution of income inequality and the socioeconomic factors affecting it using spatial analysis techniques across 16,285 block groups, 5,050 tracts, and 618 counties in the western part of the North Central Region of the United States. Different geographic aggregations result in different inequality outcomes, suggesting spatial scale needs to be carefully considered in inequality research. Inequality is spati…
