Unpacking Ingroup Source Effects in Politically Polarized Issues
Although persuasion research increasingly demonstrates that ingroup sources can enhance persuasion outcomes, the underlying processes remain unclear. Drawing on the social identity approach and moral foundations theory, we conducted an online experiment (N = 1,089) with a sample of self-identifying Republicans, examining potential mediators (prototypicality, source credibility) and moderators (source’s leadership status, moral framing) of persuas…
Exploring the Cognitive, Affective, and Conative Factors of Bystander Intervention to Improve Protective Measures During Health Emergencies
This study examines the factors shaping individuals' reactions to health-protective norm violations through the lens of cognitive accessibility, the risk-as-feelings hypothesis, and the tripartite decision-making framework. By surveying 1,426 U.S. college students, we found that frequent exposure to health information in the media is associated with an increased tendency to adopt health-protective measures and support bystander intervention (upst…
How Values Guide Trust
Guided by literature suggesting that value similarity shapes trust in scientific authorities managing technological risks, we examined how science-related values affect trust formation. Our experiment found that individual value orientations moderated the effects of scientific authorities’ value displays. They also affected how people weigh ability, benevolence, and integrity to establish trust. Individuals with high deference to scientific autho…
When Trust Matters
We tested whether perceived characteristics of behavioral measures suggested by a public health authority such as uncertainty, complexity, subjective knowledge, and perceived behavioral control would moderate the effect of trust in that authority on compliance intentions. We also tested how other known determinants of behavior such as attitude, subjective norms, perceived risks and benefits, and freedom threat would moderate trust effects. Findin…
Standing Up to the Maskless
Extending theorization on bystander intervention, this study examined antecedents of upstanding, a communication practice in which bystanders communicate disapproval to norm violators, using the context of mask wearing during COVID-19. Survey findings from undergraduate students revealed that perceived legitimacy of intervention played a key role in decisions to stand up to mask norm violators. In addition, anticipation of hostile responses from …
On the Strength of Trust
Communication studies often measure trust in or credibility of message sources as if their effects on critical consequences such as behavior are uniform across individuals and contexts. Drawing on the literature of attitude strength, this paper argues that considering the certainty of trust judgments enables researchers to better understand when trust is likely to induce desired behavior such as cooperating with a judged authority. Using two stud…
Perceived standing
In environmental conflicts, people judge others’ right to have representation in and influence on the focal issue, judgments referred to as perceived standing in this paper. This study explores the possible attitudinal and motivational antecedents driving these judgments. In a survey on a local gas storage project, participants expressed perceptions about the standing of members from other relatively distant communities. Reflecting peoples’ motiv…
Source Effects on Psychological Reactance to Regulatory Policies
Efforts to communicate risk reduction policies must consider how target audiences will respond to the source of the message. This study investigates how modifying the message source enhances or diminishes psychological reactance against a policy designed to curb a wildlife disease. In an experimental study, we attributed a press release announcing this policy to different sources. We found that the source had an indirect effect on reactance, whic…
Group norm violations in an online environmental social network
Much research has demonstrated the power of social norms to affect proenvironmental behavior and conservation-related attitudes and beliefs in traditional “offline” social contexts. With the emergence of social media and citizen science platforms that allow for socially coordinated conservation efforts at scale comes a need to better understand the influence of social norms in online contexts. The present experiment explored effects of norm viola…
