  • Bad Religion as False Religion

Open Access•David Roy Smith, Graeme Nixon et al.•BOOK•Religions•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 22

This article argues against a prevalent discourse that distinguishes "true" religion (essentially loving and peaceful) from "false" religion. Concerned this discourse might be present in Religious Education (RE), the authors surveyed 465 UK RE teachers about their beliefs on religion. The survey aimed to assess how far teachers conceptualize bad religion as false religion. Results indicate many teachers understand and present religion(s) as essen…

  • One Scientist’s Struggle to Be a Better Writer, and a Plea for Undergraduate Science-Writing Engagement

    Open Access•David Roy Smith•ARTICLE•Science Communication•2016

In an age where we are saturated with online information, effective communication is more important than ever. Unfortunately, many scientists are ineffective, unskilled, and/or not interested at communicating their research to the general public. Moreover, at some universities, undergraduate science students do not receive adequate training in writing and outreach, thus perpetuating the problem. Here, I recount my own battle to become a better sc…

  • Realism and the Boundaries of Genre in Dutch Art

    Open Access•David Roy Smith•ARTICLE•Art History•2009

These often subtle parodies point beyond prevailing definitions of realism as surface description to reveal the deeper ‘surplus’ of reality that lies beneath a given generic convention. As Bakhtin has shown, genres are inherently ideological and exemplary. By undermining their conventions, Dutch artists were also often un…

    David Roy Smith•ARTICLE•L antiquité classique•1972•Cited by: 1
