Revisiting the Communication Mediation Model in the Age of Social Media
The Communication Mediation Model (CMM) posits that media attention stimulates interpersonal discussion, which shapes attitudes and behaviors. Yet its assumptions of linear sequencing and universal applicability remain underexamined. In the era of social media, communication flows are increasingly reciprocal and socially embedded, and response behaviors such as misinformation correction and fact-checking represent new forms of media engagement ra…
How user comments affect news readers’ outgroup prejudice
The digitalization of media creates an environment for users to engage in indirect contact with outgroup members whom they would otherwise not make contact with in real life. This research investigated how vicarious contact (observing intergroup interactions) via user comments on news articles reduced readers’ prejudice against outgroups and the moderating roles of direct contact in such effects. An online experiment ( N = 700) demonstrated that …
Examining Ingroup Persuasion and Expectancy Violation as Competing Mechanisms for Biased Information Processing in Social Media
This web-based experiment (N = 447) tested competing theoretical perspectives—Expectancy Violation Theory and ingroup persuasion—on how individuals process online information about a politicized issue. Republican and Democratic participants read pro- or anti-mask comments from Democrat, Republican, or unknown sources. Results partially supported the EVT perspective: Republicans were more persuaded by attitude-consistent anti-mask comments when th…
Do Profile Photos Enhance Vicarious Intergroup Contact? Testing Theoretical Perspectives from Social Identity, the Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects (Side), and Social Presence
Profile photos are ubiquitous in online environments, yet little is known about how they shape observers’ impressions when mediated interactions involve members of different social groups. This experiment ( N = 1,661) examined how profile photos influence impressions formed during observed intergroup exchanges in news comment sections. A 2 × 2 design (topic × photo) tested mechanisms derived from Social Identity Theory (SIT), the Social Identity …
Online Information Exposure, Knowledge Development, and AI Anxiety
As Generative AI (GenAI) becomes increasingly integrated into everyday information environments, many individuals remain uncertain or reluctant to engage with these technologies despite their growing potentials. By extending the Cognitive Mediation Model (CMM), the study emphasizes the cognitive and emotional processes that underpin public engagement with emerging digital information technologies. A survey of 527 Chinese participants was conducte…
Other-Interest and compassion as mechanisms of the warranting principle
When an influencer voluntarily discloses sponsorship—rather than having it disclosed by others—it boosts the perceived accuracy of the promotional content and fosters positive attitudes toward the product by increasing viewers’ perception of the endorser’s concern for the audience’s interest. • Conversely, negative viewer comments about the endorsement lower both the perceived accuracy of the promotional content and the positive attitudes toward …
From influence to action
This study examines the self-impact of online opinion leadership on pro-environmental behavior (PEB) within Chinese social media, highlighting the mediating roles of perceived benefits and costs. While traditional perspectives often emphasize the persuasive influence of opinion leaders on others, this research underscores how assuming an opinion leadership role can shape individuals’ own behaviors. Drawing on social exchange theory, we propose th…
Structural knowledge and subjective knowledge, not factual knowledge, promotes corrective and restrictive actions towards healthy eating misinformation in China
Acquiring Social Support in an Online HPV Support Group
Social media have become crucial communication channels for human papilloma virus (HPV) patients to seek and receive social support that can benefit their physical and psychological health. To promote supportive communication on online social platforms, we analyzed 96,543 messages, including 7,407 posts and 89,136 comments, concerning social support on Baidu HPV Forum, one of China's largest online HPV support groups. We examined factors (i.e., t…
Text, Short Video, or Long Video? Effects of Attention to Various Types of Social Media on Public Knowledge of Dual Carbon
Drawing upon the cognitive mediation model, this study aims to investigate the factors that influence public knowledge of dual carbon in China. Using data collected from a survey of 500 participants living in western, eastern, central, northern, and southern cities in China, the study found that attentions to different types of social media were positively associated with elaboration and interpersonal communication. Furthermore, elaboration posit…
A longitudinal process from media to climate change knowledge
Drawing on the cognitive mediation model, we utilized two-wave data of 634 adults in China to examine the longitudinal relationships between different media attention and different knowledge acquisition about climate change. Our findings indicate that attention to social media and websites induces elaboration and consequently gaining factual and structural knowledge about climate change, whereas attention to newspapers and websites induces interp…
Examining Factors Influencing Public Knowledge, Risk Perception, and Policy Support for Waste Classification
Using the cognitive mediation model, this study aims to examine how media attention affects knowledge of the ways to implement waste classification via different information processing strategies, and ultimately influences risk perception of noncompliance with waste classification and policy support for waste classification. A total of 1,011 Chinese citizens participated in our survey using convenience sampling. The results demonstrated that medi…
How does media attention affect parental response behaviors to telecommunication fraud
The effects of self-generated and other-generated eWOM in inoculating against misinformation
Let's fight the infodemic
Purpose Drawing on the third-person effect (TPE) theory and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a theoretical framework, the current study aims to explore the cognitive mechanisms behind how third-person perception (TPP) of misinformation about public health emergencies affects intention to engage in corrective actions via attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control. Design/methodology/approach A total of 1,063 participants in…
