  • Assessing a new scale to measure parental functioning

    Open Access•Muhammad Aledeh, Adewale Allen Sokan‐adeaga et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2026•References: 53

This study was conducted primarily to investigate the basic psychometric properties of a new instrument, the Parenting‐an‐Infant Competence Scale (PICS), with a sample of middle‐ and upper‐income Nigerian mothers. A secondary aim was to produce a foundation for comparisons with other parents. Data were obtained from 184 mothers who attended child‐health clinics at a university hospital in Benin City, Edo State. Most of the item‐level attributes o…

  • Dangers associated with assuming robustness of scale reliability and validity

Selamawit Gebeyehu, Yordanos Gizachew Yeshitila et al.•ARTICLE•Health Care For Women International•2023

This study was conducted to assess the psychometric properties of the Barkin Index of Maternal Functioning (BIMF) in an Ethiopian context. Data were obtained from 202 women with a child less than 1 year of age. Narrow standard deviations characterized responses to most BIMF items, but a handful of items had wider standard deviations associated with bimodality. Most interitem correlations were < |.15|, and 13 of the 20 BIMF items did not load sati…

  • Composition and implications of foreign‐language anxiety among American study‐abroad students in Morocco

    Open Access•Elias Bensalem, Robert Trevethan•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2023•References: 6

In this study, the foreign‐language anxiety (FLA) of American students of Arabic on three study‐abroad programs in Morocco was examined. Exploratory factor analyses (EFAs) of the students’ data based on items from the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale yielded four distinct factors, or domains, of FLA: Somatic Distress, Self‐Doubt, Nonengagement, and Apprehension. Although the students had a moderate level of self‐doubt concerning their stu…

  • Influence of Response-Option Combinations when Measuring Sense of Efficacy for Teaching

    Open Access•Robert Trevethan, Kang Ma•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2021

Certain combinations of number and labeling of response options on Likert scales might, because of their interaction, influence psychometric outcomes. In order to explore this possibility with an experimental design, two versions of a scale for assessing sense of efficacy for teaching (SET) were administered to preservice teachers. One version had seven response options with labels at odd-numbered points; the other had nine response options with …

  • Efficacy Perceptions of Preservice and Inservice Teachers in China

  • Measuring Teacher Sense of Efficacy

Open Access•Kang Ma, Robert Trevethan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers of Education in China•2019

In this study, issues concerning the design of scales for measuring teacher sense of efficacy (TSE) are first identified with particular attention to the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES). Psychometric issues concerning analysis and reporting of TSE data are subsequently identified. Recommendations are offered about all identified issues, and these recommendations are taken into account when obtaining and analyzing TSE data from Chinese main…
